  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

 ... I'm sorry. I forgot about that.

While not as obvious as it would be were we to communicate in person, my social disorder still is a pain in my butt no matter what method of communication. We all live life tip toeing through a field of broken glass that is social interaction; I just so happen to be additionally blindfolded, so I have to be extra careful in what moves I make, least I step on someone's nerves (the broken glass) and suffer the consequences.

But overall, I am fine with religion, so long as people aren't coming at me guns blazing about how superior their beliefs are and how inferior I will be until I convert.

What if ... instead ... they come at you with a list of countries that depict top SAT scores, and arc & spark that you're country is down the list somewhere?

Oh, that particular statistic gets messed up because unlike in the United States where pretty much everyone takes standardized tests, in most other countries only the kids that are above average do. So the fact that people freak out because the U.S. isnt at the top humors me, because we just so happen to allow all the students to take the tests rather than just the best students.

But don't you become anesthetized to ridicule after so long?

Nope, still human. In fact, thanks to humans being naturally social group creatures, I have the desire to do that which harms me the most; interact with people.

I can't stand physical contact and yet I get crushes, I want to have friends but can't actually tell if someone is my friend or not. I can't properly empathize with people when I haven't experienced that sort of pain for myself (until a relative of mine died, I didn't know if I would cry at funerals or not. Turns out I am the water works even if I don't know the deceased). It is agony.

Since I can't tell the feelings of others very well, I end up looking into my own and hoping that how I feel about certain situations is close enough to what they will feel, but of course that doesn't work well enough to avoid issues. When you have a social disorder like me, the only person you really know is you.

Do people outside the US even do SATs?

Oh yeah, it is actually very uncommon for countries to test all of the student population. If you were to take only the top 50% of the U.S. student scores, you would actually get a ranking more comparable to that of other countries. Even Western European countries don't usually test all their students.

You mean to your satisfaction? no.

But for the record, the universe is expanding.

What do you mean, to my satisfaction? It's simple. Did people learn something from the Bible that was later shown to be true by science, or not?

And where in the Bible does it say that the universe is expanding? Or is this one of those "if you interpret the passage in a certain way" things?

Yes
And where in the Bible does it say that the universe is expanding?

Job 9:8 Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.

Psalm 104:2 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

Isaiah 42:5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

Isaiah 44:24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

Isaiah 45:12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

Isaiah 48:13 Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.

Isaiah 51:13 And forgettest the LORD thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

Jeremiah 10:12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

Jeremiah 51:15 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.

Zechariah 12:1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.

Job 9:8 Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.

Okay that is one nothing. That verse does not say that the stars are moving relative to each other.

Psalm 104:2 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

Nor does that.

Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

 That describes the Earth as flat and says nothing about stars moving relative to each other.

Isaiah 42:5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

And another failure.

Isaiah 44:24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

And another one.

Isaiah 45:12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

And yet another. All you have shown is failure on your part so far AV. Are you going to continue to do so?

Isaiah 48:13 Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.

Isaiah 51:13 And forgettest the LORD thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

Oh great, another verse that says the Earth does not move. Well done AV:doh:

Jeremiah 10:12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

Nope, still nothing.

And another that says nothing about the stars moving relative to each other and says that the Earth does not move.

Not only did you fail in showing red shift being demonstrated. Your verses at best say the Earth is flat and does not move.

This is hardly a clear statement describing an expanding universe. Perhaps if it was, we would have seen Christians telling us all that the universe was expanding before we found any evidence to support it. Tell me, AV, did any Christian use these passages to try to show that the universe was expanding before the scientific evidence for it was discovered?

The language of the Bible is poetic and a lot of is allegory. It most certain does contain some scientific facts, but there are many passages that can be interpreted to make incorrect descriptions of the universe. The Bible was never intended to be a science book so people shouldn't treat it like one. This goes for both Christians and non-Christians.

I think Galileo summed it up well: "the bible tells man how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go".

Yes, and your standards are notoriously low. None of the passages you quoted are a clear description of an expanding universe. Indeed, they all fit into the other thing I mentioned:

Or is this one of those "if you interpret the passage in a certain way" things?

I'm glad you like it.

Here's another one, Kylie ... just for you:

The Bible speaks of the Internet (electronic communication).

Job 38:35 Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
