It isn't a rule, they are just defending their beliefs, just like any theist would. Eventually, defending it all the time can chip at one's patience is all.

No, I understand what people mean when they state he wasn't a true Christian, I get that. I just don't want people to argue that he was an atheist when all evidence suggests otherwise. He even used god as a justification for the evil acts he did. I don't know if you can consider belief enough to be a Christian or not, but it wouldn't shock me if, in his twisted mind, he really thought he was doing the work of god.
