  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You may have a point. God didn't mention Elihu. He ignored him, just as he didn't mention Job's wife and ignored her. However in the last part of Job, God clarifies who spoke rightly.

it appears that Elihu was no longer on the scene and neither was Job's wife.

Was God pleased with Elihu?
That hebrew word appears to be similar to "elohiym"

Elihu to Job

Job 36:2 "Bear with me a little longer and I will show you that there is more to be said in God's behalf. 3 I get my knowledge from afar;http://www.biblestudytools.com/job/36.html#cr-descriptionAnchor-1 I will ascribe justice to my Maker.http://www.biblestudytools.com/job/36.html#cr-descriptionAnchor-2 4 Be assured that my words are not false....

Keep in mind Job's three friends misspoke of God and He rebuked them. Not so with Elihu for he was sent in "God's behalf"!

After Elihu, God takes over:

Job 38:1 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: 2 "Who is this who darkens counsel By words without knowledge?

Why did God answer Job - did Job ask a question?

Yes:

"Let the Almighty answer me; let my accuserhttp://www.biblestudytools.com/job/31.html#cr-descriptionAnchor-69 put his indictment in writing." [Job 31:35]

This is right after Job justified himself before God:

"Let God weigh mehttp://www.biblestudytools.com/job/31.html#cr-descriptionAnchor-11 in honest scaleshttp://www.biblestudytools.com/job/31.html#cr-descriptionAnchor-12 and he will know that I am blameless" [Job 31:6]

The phrase, "Words without knowledge" refers to Job's claim of blamelessness.

God said it, and Job knew he was by faith... ( This is the story I will believe and I'm sticking to it!):amen:

Job wasn't acting like a man of faith. Job was acting like a Pharisee.

Job was much like Paul before His conversion. Compare the two:

"let God weigh me (Job) in honest scales and he will know that I am blameless" [Job:31:6]

"as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless." [Phil 3:6]

What did Paul do after he met Christ? He repented:

Phil 3:7 But whatever things were gain to me (his works), those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but dung so that I may gain Christ, 9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith...."

After meeting Christ on the road to Damascus, Paul viewed his righteousness as mere "dung". Something changed when he met Christ.

How did Job view himself after God talked with him?

Job 40:3 Then Job answered the LORD, and said , 4 "Behold, I am vile..." Job 42:6 "Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes"...

Repent of what? His self-righteousness!

Now Job is a changed man. No longer is a proud, self-righteous man. Instead God had humbled him.

What happened next?

Job 42:12 "The LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the first."

As i mentioned earlier, God clarifies who spoke rightly, a little later.

God ignored Elihu. Elihu actually said that he was speaking on behalf of God. He had been talking non-stop, and God interrupted him. Then God dismisses him. He doesn't mention his name. EVER. When God later clarifies who spoke "rightly", it wasn't Elihu's name He said, it was who's name?

Key verses:

Job's self-righteousness:

"Let God weigh me (Job) in honest scales and he will know that I am blameless" [Job:31:6]

God, through Elihu, rebukes Job:

Job 36:1 Elihu continued: 2 "Bear with me a little longer and I will show you that there is more to be said in God's behalf...

Job's problem:

Job 32:1 Then these three men ceased answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. 2 But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram burned; against Job his anger burned because he justified himself before God.

Job repents:

Job 40:3 Then Job answered the LORD, and said , 4 "Behold, I am vile..." Job 42:6 "Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes"...

Job's wealth is restored:

Job 42:12 "The LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the first."

Conclusion:

When God said that Job was blameless, He was presenting Job's view of himself.

God was describing Job in the beginning of the book of Job, as Job's "standing" with God. This "standing" (see the key words that God used to describe Job that were repeated) before God is this entire series of events were allowed to occur. As it is also stated, God states to Satan these were allowed to happen to Job "without cause".

Right, but that's after Elihu and God confronted Job. After this Job repented. No longer did Job view himself as "blameless", but instead "vile". He repented before God of his self-righteousness.

Then we have this:

Job 42:1 Then Job answered the Lord .... 3 You asked, 'Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. 4 Listen, please, and let me speak; You said, 'I will question you, and you shall answer Me.' 5 "I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You. 6 Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes." 7 And so it was, after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has."

God ignored Elihu.

Pure supposition! God never rebuked Elihu. You are adding your interpretation and not letting the Bible speak for itself.

Did you guys & gals know that Nebuchadnezzar was a believer?

Did you know that he became proud?

Look:

Dan 4:30 The king spoke, saying, "Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?"

What happened?

31 While the word was still in the king's mouth, a voice fell from heaven: "King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you! 32 And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses." 33 That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles' feathers and his nails like birds' claws.

So God departed from Nebuchadnezzar and he went nutty....

34 And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever: For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom is from generation to generation.

Notice the change. No longer a proud, arrogant king. He was humbled.

Elihu's name is never mentioned. He is put into obscurity by God (which God has done many times with others in the Bible...Job's wife's name is never mentioned...and another example is Jabez's mother or brothers names are never mentioned, but they fall into obscurity, as did Elihu. Elihu was not, from all accounts, part of Job's life after the restoration, but was as if he never existed (obscure) Getting back to Job, Job was faced with the absolute holy-ness of God, face to face. Any of His servants who have been in His presence have done the same thing, fall on their face and say for instance 'woe is me' for we ARE vile. We are "fallen" creatures. In God's presence we would ALL fall on our faces.

In the very beginning of the book of Job. it is GOD Who describes Job. These key words that God states throughout HIs entire Word are what gives a man "right standing" with God. And they are:

To "fear" God
To "eschew" evil (avoid it and to turn from it)

In Proverbs it is written:

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." ~Proverbs 9:10

In addition, Job "knew" God.

A key here in all of these events and lamentations of Job is that Job knew his conscience was clear. He was "blameless". What he was struggling with is the complete confusion of why this was happening to him, and that God was silent and that it seemed to Job that he was going to die in the midst of the darkness and evil that surrounded and hovered and shot through him.

Elihu was not speaking for God. From what he said and accused Job of, it became clear that He didn't know God. Elihu, in essence was "beating Job up". It wasn't GOD that prompted Elihu to do this.

... God states to Satan these were allowed to happen to Job "without cause".

Job 2:1 On another day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. 2 And the LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." 3 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he (Job) still maintains his integrity (blamelessness), though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason."

Satan didn't have a good reason that incited God to allow Job's ruin. However, God knew Job's problem.

Acknowledging Who God is, and being a "believer" are not the same.

Where did you get that "quote" at the top of this post (post #94) that has my name attached to it? I never wrote that.
