  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Will someone let me know when the War on Christmas starts this year.

Hi everyone

I haven't been around for awhile. I needed to take a break from the partisan arguing (and I've been unusually busy). But I would like to ask a favor - can someone let me know when the War on Christmas starts up again? The War on Christmas has become an enjoyable part of my holiday season, and I want to fight side-by-side with my Christmas Jihadi brothers and sisters as we once again try to stop Christmas from happening in every home in America (and perhaps even abroad one day). In the meantime, I'll try to check in periodically to see if I can offer any support.

Death to Christmas!!!

Cheers

The war is ongoing, but the battles seem to be intensifying as the season nears. To wit,

The best aspect of Christmas is the aspect usually decried by the mystics: the fact that Christmas has been commercialized.

That the left views the commercialization of Christmas as the true meaning of the holiday goes a long way toward explaining the war on the actual meaning of Christmas

Good thing, then, that the Left doesn't view that as the true meaning, but rather the unfortunate reality.

I've gotta say, I think having the tree up so early lessens the magic for the kids. Sure, my 7 year old was excited to first see the tree this weekend just gone, but you think she's going to maintain that level of excitement for the next 2 months? By the time its actually Christmas, all the decorations and Christmas marketing will have pretty much become a constant unremarked background buzz.

I know what they say about nostalgia, but I remember the Christmas period from when I was a kid being a highly intense couple of weeks, rather than a long and drawn out thing that went for almost a quarter of the year. I only hope that when she grows up she'll have the same fondness for her memories of Christmas today as I have for my memories of Christmas then.

I can agree with you here. When I was younger, Christmas decorations didn't pop up in the stores until at least right before Thanksgiving. We usually put our tree up the day after Thanksgiving (before Black Friday anyway) and then spent the next couple of weeks decorating the rest of the house.

My kids will love Christmas from now right up to Christmas and probably a few weeks after. That's just how they roll I guess.

In Austria when I was little the Christkind (a Christ child figure probably not to be confused with the actual Jesus) brings the tree and presents on Christmas Eve. Nikolo (St. Nicholas) comes earlier in December (the 5th I think) to bring candy for good children, while his associate the demonlike Krampus brings switches and coal for bad children.

Getting the tree from the local scout group a week or so before Christmas was the family tradition for me. Christmas is the height of summer here, and we don't use the lovely spruces you guys get, they don't grow in Australian climates, we tended to use the little radiatas, which have a pretty limited life after they've been cut down and stood in a bucket of water in the Australian heat. Nowadays, using a living, potted tree has become fashionable, though for obvious reasons this tends to limit the size of the tree. The technology of realistic artificial trees has hugely increased since I was a kid, which is what my family use in Brisbane nowadays, but the idea of having the tree as early as your black Friday seems really strange to me. Like I was saying, when I was a kid, the entire Christmas season was packed into a couple of weeks. Wen went from nothing at all in the shops to full on, every shop and house decorated in about a weekend. Christmas felt like a physical presence you knew was coming, and soon. I miss that feeling, and can't help but think kids today are missing out. Of course, I realise that kids today might have the same feeling, and I don't because I'm a grown up, and it just doesn't grab you the same way. But, you know, sentimental nostalgia.

I don't recall anyone claiming that conservative = the left

I don't recall you calling out your fellow Conservatives for their war on Christmas, either
