Nothing; you were wrong back then.
Also, regarding your assumptions, it was German scientists (among others) who suspected and proved the link between Thalidomide and birth defects, so it seems unlikely that Germans were developing Thalidomide for nefarious purposes. This is more apparent when one considers that Thalidomide was used in Germany as well.
