  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Name a doctrine that you used to believe in but dont anymore.

Which denominations were they?

Well, I didn't want to open a bigger can of worms by naming them.

But, as long as nobody starts flaming, in order of affiliation they were Church of Christ, Seventh-Day Adventist, and Oneness Pentecostal.

Why wouldn't you believe the whole bible? Is there some part you don't believe?
I don't believe the chapters & verses, & the books aren't in chronological order ordinarily, so a lot of the arc of the narrative is confused.
But the larger question about how much to believe regards the existence of different canons. And, that's a critical point for Catholics anyway, because of there being multiple claims to orthodoxy.

Those aren't denominations any more than Mormon or Jehovah Witness are. CoC denies the trinity and believes works salvation, SDA believes a prophetess that is proven to be a false prophetess over the Bible, OP denies the trinity.

Methodist and Baptist are denominations. Glad we got that cleared up. :)

Oh, please. Let's not get into fighting over whose beliefs are right, and whose beliefs are wrong. I've dealt with enough of that in my lifetime. Can't we just stick with what we used to believe, but don't anymore?

I'm asking this as a participant, not as staff. This is not a Mod Hat post.

Where's the fun in that :p

Mind you, you are right about sticking with what we do no longer believe. That's the thread topic after all.

So ... let's see ... I no longer accept the table of contents in my KJV :D

No they don't. And even if they did, majority does not rule on what is or is not true.

You're right that the majority doesn't make something true.

That said, some numbers might help with the "no they don't" claim:

Roman Catholics - 1.2 billion
Eastern Orthodox - 230 million
Anglicans - 85 million
Oriental Orthodox - 82 million
Lutherans - 75 million
Methodists - 75 million

= 1.75 billion

Of the roughly 2.18 billion Christians, 1.75 billion is a pretty good majority, about 80% according to my fumbling with the calculator.

I would agree with her. I sense that a bit of your first response was quibbling over terms at best (i.e. denominations vs. faith groups). And unless you've ever been 'Oneness Pentecostal', SDA, or otherwise, I'm not sure you can authoritatively say WHAT they believe. It would be like me saying Catholics (no offense ;) ) are undoubtedly heretics because they worship Mary, a point I have absolutely no first-hand knowledge of.

*And yes, I have read the whole thread :)

Perhaps you can fumble with your calculator some more to identify this man in Reve 13?

Rev 13:18
Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number [is] 666.

5585. psephizo from 5586; to use pebbles in enumeration, i.e. (generally) to compute:--count.

Rev 2:17
He who is having an ear -- let him hear what the Spirit saith to the assemblies: To him who is overcoming, I will give to him to eat from the hidden manna, and will give to him a white pebble,
and upon the pebble a new name written, that no one knew except him who is receiving [it].

5586. psephos from the same as 5584; a pebble (as worn smooth by handling),
