• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Dealing with health care can be one of the biggest stressors of being chronically ill. There are times I've contemplated giving up and saying why bother trying to go through this process. Some times health care can be harder on my health than it is healing. I was wondering if anyone would share their experiences and ideas of dealing with health care issues. Big things little things doesn't matter.

seems like the more you try to heal and actively get better the more difficult the health or disability benefits makes things. on one hand there's a push to get better but on the other hand they don't want to pay for the treatment or help needed. go figure. i know canadians aren't the only ones who have problems with their health care. being chronically ill isn't just difficult because we're ill, it's difficult because we have a whole lot of paper work, red tape and some difficult people to deal with and it's usually when we feel most ill. There lies many of the stressors.

I'm in that tough spot where there is no health care available for my illness because I'm in an early-ish stage. The best line of defense is a very healthy (aka expensive!) diet and exercise, particularly muscle building. On our budget I have to pick and choose what I can do to keep from deteriorating, but the health care system has nothing to do with any of that. If I chose to just depend on it, I would have to let myself deteriorate and wait until I'm totally dependent on them for my daily living. (Yikes!) Too bad because I'm sure it would be much less financial stress on our already failing system to just help people make healthier choices than all the care, medications, health care workers, etc. required when things do deteriorate.

So, what do I do? Educate myself, keep copies of all my medical tests/records, and be the one to make the decisions about my medical care as best I can. I don't depend on doctors to look out for me. They're more of a tool to be utilized as needed. And I eat as best I can and exercise as best I can with the energy and resources I have. I've also had to really get it through my head that healthcare is not a right, it's a privilege.

I too find I need to be very aware of documentation in my files in order make sure things run smoothly and everyone receives accurate documentation. We do need to take responsibility for our health and decisions regarding medications, treatments, etc. I think any relationship we have with professionals should be a partnerships with 2 people discussing things and making decisions together. The only problem with this is that I've found a fair few doctors would rather the patient simply do what they want the patient to do and aren't always willing to openly discuss things and consider the patient's opinions as they should. This can be rather frustrating and a real hindrance to moving toward effective treatment plans.

If you think you have problems in canada try the usa and try getting help from public assistance . What a nightmare and I for one because my husband works I have to pay a certain amount to get medicaid . I hate that when I worked half my life to pay into the system and now when I need it I have to still pay for it . Which sometimes aggrivates my nerves which starts up my pain and my anxiety and my depression . They say they want to help and I almost have to laugh . Oh well I so understand how you feel .

Yes, the American public assistance system is quite similar to the Canadian medical system as a whole. The waiting list for an MRI here on the west coast is about two years, and that's if it's a serious issue. Hip surgery is longer and seniors are dieing of infection from their hip problems before they even get to have the surgery now.

It is frustrating to have no control, no matter what you pay into. When people really need medical help here, they go down across the border and pay for it.

Anyway, I'm sorry you're struggling with that too. The last thing any of us needs is the medical system making us worse!

Thanks for you post and understanding. It sure isn't a pleasant situation wherever we are. It' seems like a constant fight just to get simple things that we can't go without. It's like it's all business and not care giving. This is so unfortunate.

Yes, the system is frustrating. Wow, that's a long time for an MRI. Here in my province it's much less but it's a 2 year waiting list for a sleep study.

Health care is must to live a better life. There are many companies which work on home health care of the elder people. They provide all the facilities regarding medicines, hygienic foods etc. You cab easily get services of these type of companies to take care of your elder ones.

I'm going to keep in mind what you have said about 'educate myself' - I have heard of people who have been royally twisted by a healthcare clinic when they didnt keep tabs on what was happening

Yes, unfortunately it can happen and it is not what anyone who is chronically needs during their struggles. There are some good people out there though. Some are beholden to the clinic / agency they work for but it seems to have become so much more a business than simply resources so it can be difficult for some patients and decent professionals.

I think it depends which country / agency a patient is dealing with. It can also depend on once income etc.

I support healthy living style, but with this you need to take care of your health. Many of the old homes are working to provide the best health care facilities to elder people because they can't take care of themself. I think if you can't have these services at home so it's better for you to join any old home facilities.

It's unfortunate that some can not find proper care.
