  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was going to argue the point that atheists don't hate God since they don't even believe he exists,
What about atheists who ridicule those who do believe in God?

What about atheists who ask a valid question, then ridicule the answer?

What about atheists who ask a question ... knowing the answer ... then ridicule the answer?

They're neutral, are they?

The sheer volume of these derailing posts on this thread means some responses will go unnoticed.
Well, that´s the way it always goes in internet discussions.
For some strange reason, however, you put much effort on commenting on the derailing posts and ignore the on topic posts(and thereby help the derailing of this thread). Doesn´t exactly suggest that you were interested in the responses, in the first place.

Yes, what about them? Nothing suggests that they "hate God".

The poster didn´t proclaim them to be neutral. He said that an atheist can´t hate God. Please try to concentrate.

Why do atheists get married?

I have wondered this for some time now; and I'm just asking out of curiosity.
The 1,138 federal benefits that same-sex marriages just gained, for starters.

But what about 100 years ago? or 150? or 200?
Has there been a government within the past 200 years that has recognized marriages without providing some number of benefits? I honestly don't know.

If for no other reason, the tax benefits.

A more important and more difficult question is "Why don't all professing Christians get married?"

It appears most have missed the point. While not speaking for the OP, his question seems to ask why would someone opposed to religion be subject to the church in a bond of marriage, where said bond is sacred before man, woman, and God when atheists are so opposed. It would appear an atheist might be more inclined to enter into a civil union which is not under the bonds of church and God.
He asked about atheists. He didn't specify "atheists who are opposed to religion."

Are you aware that legal marriages exist? The civil unions of which you speak are not the same thing. Not all marriages are associated with the Abrahamic God, much less any Christian church.

But what about 100 years ago? or 150? or 200?

Are you not satisfied with the answers you have already been given? Freodin summarized:
A) They don't.
B) One of the partners is religious and wants the ceremony.
C) They like the event, even if they don't buy the theology.
D) Tradition.
To which I would add (as I mentioned way back when):
E)They are still 'in the closet'.

All of these apply just as well 200 years ago as today.

Probably for the same reason that christians get divorced, because they can.
Matthew 19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

A very good question -- worthy of its own thread.

Like I just said, can you name a time when governments recognized marriages without attaching any benefits to them? Honest question because I don't know.

Did you realize that christians have a much higher divorce rate than non-believers?

Look up the data, it is very interesting.

Yes, and that's sad.

We use statistics like that to make the point that Satan goes after Christians more than he does unbelievers.

After all, he already has them.

If he already has them, why the much lower divorce rate?
Again, because he's not influencing them as much as he does Christians.

Put another way: The devil prioritizes.

Two atheists divorce? meh

Two Buddhists divorce? meh

Two Christians divorce? now there's a story.

Look at it this way: Which stands out more? two accountants who divorce, or two marriage counselors who divorce?
