  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I do not know a lot about whiskey what do you guys recommend?

Scotch! As JM said, start with blended because it's cheaper. Once you go to single-malt, it's hard to go back to blended. Stay away from the Islay 'petey' stuff in my opinion.:)

Enjoy!

When I can afford it I like the Islay pete monsters scotch...I can almost never afford it so I drink other stuff.

I got a bottle of Jim Beam Rye from a friend and I'm sticking with Dark Horse for a while. When it warms up, back to gin and tonic.

Whene’re I take my pipe and stuff it
And smoke to pass the time away,
My thoughts as I sit there and puff it,
Dwell on a picture sad and grey:
It teaches me that very like
Am I myself unto my pipe.
Like me, this pipe so fragrant burning
Is made of naught but earth and clay;
To earth I too shall be returning.
It falls and, ere I’d think to say,
It breaks in two before my eyes;
In store for me a like fate lies.
No stain the pipe’s hue yet doth darken;
It remains white. Thus do I know
That when to death’s call I must harken
My body too, all pale will grow
To black beneath the sod ’twill turn.
Or when the pipe is fairly glowing,
Behold then, instantaniously,
The smoke off into thin air going,
Till naught but ash is left to see.
Man’s frame likewise away will burn
And unto dust his body turn.
How oft it happens when one’s smoking:
The stopper’s missing from the shelf,
And one goes with one’s finger poking
Into the bowl and burns oneself.
If in the pipe such pain doth dwell,
How hot must be the pains of Hell.
Thus o’er my pipe, in contemplation
Of such things, I can constantly
Indulge in fruitful meditation
And so, puffing contentedly,
On land, on sea, at home, abroad,
I smoke my pipe and worship God.

A friend brought me a bottle of American rye from her trip to Florida. Jim Beam rye, its not something you can find around here...I'm not sure what to make of it. It doesn't seem all that feisty, nothing like the stuff produced by Alberta Distillers, I think I'll stick to Alberta Springs and Dark Horse when it come to rye.

I need a Hot Toddy recipe for tonight. This cold has been kicking my butt and the meds are not helping so a family member said they remember having a Hot Toddy when they were younger and it fixed them up. They couldn't remember what was in it.

Any good, tried and tested Hot Toddy recipes you would like to share?

Thanks.

I regularly drink a hot toddy whenever I have a cold. In fact I bought some lemons today so I can make one tonight. I don't use an official recipe, but make them to taste as I was taught by my dad, who learned it from his grandfather. I start with a hot cup of tea, or if at night, hot water. Add a generous tablespoon of local raw honey. To that squeeze the juice of half a lemon, and a shot of brandy/rum/whiskey, whatever is on hand. I've had them with brandy or rum, but prefer rum.

I love lamb chops but never made a leg of lamb. Any recommended recipes, recipes that you have tried and enjoyed?
