  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have had a number of emails from the FBI appear in my junk box. They say that my details have come up in investigating a fraud in Nigeria. All I had to do is send them my bank details and they would send me the $150,000.00 they have earmarked as mine.

The best part about it is that I also received an e-mail the other day from a relative of Charles Taylor ex president of Liberia wanting to send me $200,000.00.

I immediately resigned from my job and now await my bountious future.

I have noticed that my bank account appears to have emptied itself but this is not a worry as the money from the FBI and the Taylor family should arrive very soon.

O happy days ;)

Dear Echolipse,

Rest assured I did not fall for the scam. The post was meant to be light hearted. Sorry if I worried you.

It does make you think though that scamming that is so prevalent on the internet must work to a certain degree or why would the scammers keep on trying.

I get about three scam emails a month usually in my junk box. But I was really surprised at the ones I have received purporting to come from the FBI. They had the FBI logo on and also had names of actual assistant directors. Maybe the FBI should speak with their CIA colleagues in Nigeria to go and have a "word" with the scammers.

I actually had someone with a very strong middle east accent call me on the phone. He wanted to help me get rid of a virus on my computer. He told me where to bring up my command prompt and he wanted me to type in something. Instead I typed it into Google and ran a search. It came up that he was running a scam. When I told him that, he hung up on me. I had to yell at him a few times to get him to pronounce his words correctly. I think he just wanted a free English lesson. They should make it a rule if they want to scam you then they have to learn the language first. If they are to lazy to do that. Then at least do like Psy does and get up and do a song and a dance with some pretty girls.

The scammers are really seeking me out this week. I have found two from Prince Charles in my junk box,

Attn: To the Recipient,

I am Mrs.Joyce Fredrick and am writing this mail with tears because I lost my lovely wealthy husband in a plane crash (5) years ago. Thereafter my husbands relatives forcefully took away all our properties except a secret banked investment fund with a group in my name.

Presently I am hospitalized for breast cancer which my doctor told me that I may not live for extra (6) months. I'm with my laptop in the hospital where am undergoing cancer treatments and would not live to see my husbands relatives have access to the investment fund in my name with the group because of theirs wickedness.

Having known that I might not live for extra (6) months, I have therefore advised my attorney to prepare the fund released to you as our family investor because its my last wish to see the fund wisely invested in any business of your choice, while its profits distributed to charity organizations, the poor and motherless babies homes. Without hesitation, forward Your Full Names, Mobile, Tel, Fax No, Address and Your Age to enable my attorney prepare the fund released to you without delay. Respond only to our family private and secured Email: princecharles_fred@yahoo.com for more details, advice and guidelines.

I love how they intentionally mis-pronounce phrases to make them seem like they are from another country.
Oh, they are from another country? Then how do they know about me and why pick me ??
You mean out of all the 80 gagillion emails in the world I somehow became the "chosen one"??
The Laaaawd works in mysterious ways!

Those 419 scams are downright entertaining.
419 Eater - The largest scambaiting community on the planet!

Whoever runs that site has the art of keeping these people going down pat. I always attract them when I put something for sale on craigslist. Irritating. At least they're easy to spot and none to bright.

I am horrible at reading sarcasm over the internet. Please tell me you didn't fall for the scam right? I'd suggest contacting a computer shop to have them check for viruses, malicious software if you don't know how to do it yourself.

Yeah I've received e-mails like this before and I was smart enough to know it was a scam.

How on earth could you fall for something like this?

You know I received e-mails like this one in which family members claimed their deceased relatives want ME to have all their money. I mock these people because I know they're trying to scam me!

Perhaps the FBI and CIA are trying to help pay down the national debt? Get enough people to fall for this and you could put a real dent in it.
