I just thought I would post these verses about the unexpected nature of Christ's return. It is very interesting that virtually every time that Christ talks about his return he talks about its sudden or unexpected nature. This links up with the book of Revelation in Revelation 16:15 where it says "Behold, I come as a thief." Here are the passages:
"5 As the bridegroom was delayed,
all of them became drowsy and slept. 6 But at midnight there was a shout, Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him." Mt. 25:5-6 (NRSV)
This is interesting because it portrays the church as totally unaware of Christ's return - they are sleeping because he has delayed his coming. The passage indicates that the return catches the church nearly unawares, or that they're unaware until the very, very, end.
"37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39 and
they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man." Mt. 24:37-39 (NRSV)
"42 Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day[
i] your Lord is coming. 43 But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for
the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour." Mt. 24:42-44 (NRSV)
"45 Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves[
j] their allowance of food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked slave says to himself,
My master is delayed, 49 and he begins to beat his fellow slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50 the master of that slave will
come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know. 51 He will cut him in pieces[
k] and put him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Mt. 24:45-51 (NRSV)
Here the reason for a surprise return is given again: The slave thinks his master is delayed and so he sees no urgent need to get ready. The master then returns at a totally unexpected hour and the slave is caught by surprise.
"33 Beware, keep alert;[
a] for you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35 Therefore, keep awakefor you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36
or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37
And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake." Mk. 13:33-37 (NRSV)
"35 Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36 be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.
39 But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he[
g] would not have let his house be broken into. 40
You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour." Luke 12:35-40 (NRSV)
"45 But if that slave says to himself, My master is delayed in coming, and if he begins to beat the other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the master of that slave will come on
a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in pieces,[
h] and put him with the unfaithful. Lu. 12:45-46 (NRSV)
"26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so too it will be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 They were eating and drinking, and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed all of them. 28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 29 but on the day that Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from heaven and destroyed all of them 30
it will be like that on the day that the Son of Man is revealed." Lu. 17:26-30 (NRSV)
In other words, it is life as normal until the Son of man is revealed. This totally confirms the other passage we have looked at. The warnings given by Christ are very, very dire. He tells you in no uncertain terms to be ready because his return will be sudden and unexpected.
"34 Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and
that day does not catch you unexpectedly, 35 like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36
Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man." Lu. 21:34-36 (NRSV)
"Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters,[
a] you do not need to have anything written to you. 2 For you yourselves know very well that
the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 When they say, There is peace and security, then
sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! 4 But you, beloved,[
b] are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; 5 for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 6
So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober;" 1 Th. 5:1-6
"10 But
the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed" 2 Pet. 3:10 (NRSV)
"15
(See, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and is clothed,[
a] not going about naked and exposed to shame.)" Rev. 16:15 (NRSV)
This verse in Revelation confirms everything else we have seen in all the other passages.
So over and over and over again we are warned of the sudden and unexpected nature of the coming. We are told there will be dire consequences if we are not prepared (spiritually, obviously). We are told over and over and over again to keep alert. The coming must be sudden; it must be unexpected; it must take the world by surprise.
Very interesting things to ponder.
