  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you (or will you) tell your little kids about him? I think my wife and I will tell our kids. No harm in a little imagination and fantasy. All kids eventually find out it's not real. I figured it out when I was 7. But my parents really stretched the fun to make it seem more "realistic". They said it wasn't always the same Santa. They said that one retires when he gets too old and looks for a new one to take his place but not just anyone could be Santa. The candidate must be Dutch, must be Christian, must be named Nicholas, must speak at least 100 languages fluently, and must have the Christmas spirit in his heart all year long and if he has kids, they must be grown up. That's what we'll do when our daughter is born. That's what my oldest sister told our nieces.

I believe the best way to bridge the two ideologies of secular xmas and the true Christmas spirit for kids to understand and still not feel alienated from their friends is to teach them about the real Saint Nichocals. That way you teach them true history that encompasses a Saint Nick character but is more representative of giving than receiving.

I don't see how you could tell your kids that Santa is real, without lying. So what would be the point?

Simple answer: The things people say aren't just simply divided into truth and lies. There is an in-between. This is what we call having fun and making kids happy. What are you gonna do if a little girl pretends she's an actress or princess or a little boy pretends he's a Space Marine or professional athlete, call them liars?

There's a big different between a kid pretending to be an actess and lying to your kids about Santa. Your lying, there pretending. They know their pretending. You know your lying to get your kid to believe in a fictional character. Also your teaching your kids to worship Santa. Also I've always knew the truth about Santa, I have good Christmas.

So by that rationale of "telling your kids that Santa is real = lying"......... If I am throwing my wife a surprise birthday party, and we all tell my wife that we are going out to the store so she doesn't find out that we are planning a surprise birthday party......is that still a lie that is sending us all to burn? Just curious, and wondering if there is a difference between Santa and a surprise birthday.

I raised my son without Santa. not because its lying, even though it is, that's not the point. I raised him without Santa for the same reason I raised him without the Easter bunny. because both holidays are suppose to be about Jesus, but somehow Jesus got replaced by fictional characters. Now that hes older I asked him if he would have rather believed in Santa. He said no, that he likes knowing the truth. and he still got to have everything else about Christmas, just not Santa.

I don't lie about birthday partys.

No offense but really? Of all my threads, even some more recent ones, this is the one that gets revived?
7th December 2012 is not that long ago. I asked questions years ago, they get revived too.

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

I believe this takes away from the question of lying or not and replaces the Christmas message as not to be about receiving and trees and a big fat red man. If we use Christmas as a time of worship and praise for God sending us His son, then we should be able to give to one another and not concern ourselves with fictional characters. Our children can still enjoy Christmas but for what it should be about.

Why not? Get the anti-Santa committee going and it's going to be a feeding frenzy. That's like asking a bunch of Independent Baptist Fundamentalists what they think of heavy metal music.
The person that brought it up first thought, it was okay to lie about Santa. I'm not religious at all, don't think it's okay to lie to kids about Santa or Birthdays.

Our kids (now 30 and 28) knew all about Santa, but we raised them to see him the same as Mickey or Goofy or any other fictional character. They knew he wasn't real, but since we didn't dwell on it, it was never a big deal one way or the other.
My own personal conviction was we never had any Santa decorations in the house. NOT because I thought it was wrong or inappropriate; I just thought there was enough Santa in the world already. But again, because I never made an issue of it, I doubt anyone ever even noticed the lack of Santa.
