What Does It Mean to Speak in Tongues While Sleeping?

Hi, I wonder if anyone has any ideas for me please. I have been speaking in tongues for just over 2 years now. Lately I've been asking to be filled with the Holy Spirit on just about a weekly basis as I believe we need to be refilled regularly. I've also been asking for more language as my tongues 'vocabulary' hasn't been very wide.

For the last week or so, possibly longer, I keep waking myself up by praying in tongues in my sleep! This has been sufficient to disturb my sleep. I don't seem to talk in tongues for long; just long enough to break my sleep and then I can't go back to sleep again!! Does anyone know why this is happening and why I'm talking in tongues whilst asleep? I'm really feeling tired now zzzzzz

I've been trying to go deeper in my relationship with Jesus and am spending much more time reading my bible and just being still, searching for him. Since I asked for more I seem to be able to pray but with my mind be able to picture him on the cross dying for my sins or with lots of children at his feet. My love for him is increasing as I'm seeking to know him more.

Sounds like you're on the right path all around. Relax and enjoy the ride. Perhaps the reason you're waking up praying in tongues is because the Spirit desires to intercede through you for a particular reason. Instead of fighting it, flow with it. Pray for a few minutes in tongues when it happens and begin to thank God for being used by His Spirit, worship Him quietly and soon you'll drift back asleep in His peace.

It appears as though you are on the right track in your relationship with Jesus. There are a couple of things to think about.

Many Christians have woken up with a burden to pray. You seem to be waking up praying already. Not long ago, I heard a Sunday school teacher recounting how he woke up in the middle of the night burdened to pray for someone he hadn't seen in years. Later that day while he was working (he's a coach), he looked over to see that person sitting in their car at the redlight next to the field. He was so excited he jumped over the fence and scared the poor soul half to death running up to their car exclaiming,"God woke me up last night to pray for you!" He didn't go into what it was about but it was definitely a divine appointment.

Another thing to think about is that the tongues may not be waking you up. You may be coming out of your sleep for other reasons and then immediately starting to pray. As it's a common time to have little self control as we first wake up, it's awesome to think you are waking up and immediately starting to pray in tongues. Don't overlook those other reasons you may be waking up in the middle of the night and seek medical help if it comes to that.

One of my pastors says that if it's God waking her she's going to pray in obedience, and if it's the devil waking her she's going to pray to make him regret it.

I've thought the same thing. One of the devil's best tactics against Christians is to disturb sleep to make us vulnerable. Using the time to pray would certainly make him rethink his approach.

Jiminpa I had to smile at what your pastor said - if it's the devil waking me I like to think I'll be kicking his sorry butt in tongues!!

Thanks very much for all your responses everyone, you've all been really helpful. I shall continue to go deeper in my relationship with Jesus and see what happens next.
