The fact that you guys are talking about the military in the manner that you are, shows that you are completely missing the broader meaning of the usage of the word "foxhole" in the provided quote.
His point is not that there are no atheists in the military guys! The point is that when one is confronted with the awareness of the immanence of death, they definently are not going to be concerned about remaining true to their atheistic philosophy! They are no doubt going to be concerned about whether or not they are ready for that final, unavoidable, moment in which they are going to cease to live in this world as well as the possible ramifications that may come as a result of living according to their most valued views.
So why would the real possibility of impending death cause someone to start believing in fairy tales?
Honestly, if I was in that situation, the thought of God probably wouldn't even enter into my head. I'd be too busy trying to figure out how to not get killed.
