  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Just a friendly reminder that Pi Day is coming very soon!

I could reissue my Pi challenge ... but I'll refrain.

:)

How do genes code for pupils, the circular entrances in the eye? Is it possible for gene therapy to give us spirals, like Franz Anton Mesmer had?
Gene therapy's use is overrated. We'd need much more sophisticated technology.

That said, squid look like a good candidate for human hybrids...

God, can you imagine seeing polarised light? It'd have destroyed this 'new wave' 3D industry before it got started!

Personally, I want to be able to see as much as the EM spectrum as possible. I'd love to be able to coronal loops with a telescope and my eye.
This is an exchange between Cavil and Ellen from Battlestar Galactica (I've coloured it white to try and hide it; curses on CF and its non-white background and lack of spoiler tags!):

Cavil: In all your travels, have you ever seen a star supernova?

Ellen: No.

Cavil: No. Well, I have. I saw a star explode and send out the building blocks of the universe, other stars, other planets, and eventually other life, a supernova, creation itself. I was there. I wanted to see it, and be part of the moment. And you know how I perceived one of the most glorious events in the universe? With these ridiculous gelatinous orbs in my skull. With eyes designed to perceive only a tiny fraction of the EM spectrum, with ears designed only to hear vibrations in the air.

Ellen: The five of us designed you to be as human as possible.

Cavil: I don’t want to be human. I want to see gamma rays, I want to hear X-rays, and I want to smell dark matter. Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can’t even express these things properly, because I have to — I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid, limiting spoken language, but I know I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws, and feel the solar wind of a supernova flowing over me. I’m a machine, and I can know much more, I could experience so much more, but I’m trapped in this absurd body. And why? Because my five creators thought that God wanted it that way.

My thoughts exactly!

Have you guys heard of HR 205, The Geometric Simplification Act?

Ian Squires: Conservative Pie: Republicans Introduce Legislation Redefining Pi as Exactly 3

Congresswoman Martha Roby (R-Ala.) is sponsoring HR 205, The Geometric Simplification Act, declaring the Euclidean mathematical constant of pi to be precisely 3. The bill comes in response to data and rankings from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, rating the United States' 15 year-olds 25th in the world in mathematics.

"That long-held empirical value of pi, I am not saying it should be necessarily viewed as wrong, but 3 is a lot better," said Roby, the 34-year old legislator representing Alabama's second congressional district, ushered into office in the historic 2010 Republican mid-term bonanza.

"It's no panacea, but this legislation will point us in the right direction. Looking at hard data, we know our children are struggling with a heck of a lot of the math, including the geometry incorporating pi," Roby said. "I guarantee you American scores will go up once pi is 3. It will be so much easier."

Sorry, but I think it might be just you.

This doesn't kinda look like the pi symbol? All it's missing is the connecting line on the top.

Then again, this is a chinese character. And much of Japanese writing borrows from Chinese.

Hehe. It's a brilliant joke. But, such laws have been attempted passed in the states before. Specifically in Indiana, 1897.

It distresses me that I don't know if this is satirical or not...

Exactly! First time I read it I had the same exact thought, and then I thought, what world is this that we live in when I can actually think something like this can be true? It is a satire by the way.
