Jesus talks about coming to Him all who are weary, take his yoke and He will give us rest for our souls

Hebrews talks about a Sabbath rest
some believers enter it some dont

to you what does this mean, how do you personally enter God's rest

When Jesus said "take my yoke" he was referring to his teachings. In Hebrew culture a Rabbi's teaching is called his yoke. It is a contrast he was giving from the heavy yoke the Pharisees were putting on the people.

When Paul (or whoever wrote Hebrews) mentions entering into God's rest, he is speaking to Hebrews about entering in and holding on to faith in Christ. The entering into rest is entering into God's completed work on our behalf. They were tempted to abandon this faith because of pressure and the letter was written to admonish them that Jesus is God's way and that the old way was only a shadow and pointing forward of what was completed and fulfilled in Christ and to reject it would be to reject God.

The entering into God's rest in Hebrews is an entering into resting from our own works and trusting in God's completed work in Christ. The letter of Hebrews is about holding fast to faith in Jesus because he is the new and living way.

As for Jesus' words about his yoke being easy and light, keep in mind, he was alluding to what He would accomplish on our behalf on the cross. That is why the new testament letters are so important, because they give us the view of the new covenant in light of what Jesus accomplished. Jesus was always pointing toward to His doing of God's will which was to make a way for all who believe and trust in Him.

I have come to understand that the yoke being referred to is love. The love we have for our children causes us to put them first. Overtime I do believe that we can come to put neighbors and strangers first also. When we can give to all who ask, regardless of whether we have enough for ourselves, we are living in faith that God will provide. That faith is rest. The summation of Jesus teachings to me seems to be, I'll take care of you, you take care of others.

This same concept applies to betrayals, false accusations, transgressions and all other things that people and life brings against us. Faith doesn't take away the pain, but it encourages us to rest with God through the ups and downs of life. He has a plan for my life and only I can cause that plan not to happen by not resting in trust of His goodwill and ability to be God.

On the seventh day God was finished with His work which He had made, so He rested on the 7th day from all His work which He had made. God blessed the 7th day and separated it as Holy.

God doesn't need to rest, but He sat down for us. Why? My answer would be to lead by example, just as His Son would do, as His Prophets would do, and as His children would do, to live as an example, as a light to their Brothers and Sisters, and as a glory to Him.

If He did it Himself, He then set the day apart as Holy. Both Moses and Joshua had to take their sandals off because they stood on Holy ground. Why was the ground Holy?
Because God Himself stood there.

Have you ever heard Him say, He declared the end from the beginning?

In Genesis, at the point of creation He told us to observe His Sabbath to keep His plan for us forever before our eyes.

The Sabbath is a type and shadow of the millenium reign of the Messiah. Contrary to what the false prophets of evolution suggest, God gave Man 6,000 years to realize we cannot rule over ourselves. At the exact mark of 6,000 by His timepiece of perfection, Jesus will reign.

For one thousand years which is symbolized by His Sabbath day, the Earth will be silent and peaceful, without sin, as Satan and his angels will be locked away in the pit. The silence will be peaceful like we cannot imagine as Satan's voice we will no longer hear. He is called by God Himself, the Prince of the air.

Under the rule of Jesus we will be at peace with our neighbor, living without fear, in perfect happiness and bountiful abundance.

Inside all of us is a voice. Can you hear it speaking to you? This is not the way we are supposed to live. I shouldn't think thoughts I often cannot help but have. Why did I say that, why did I do that?

Will it not be wonderful to live for a thousand years at peace, without those demonic voices, and influences. Read Ephesians 6 again, be aware of the enemy of the air, who's greatest trick is to hide as if he is not there. A thousand years without him. Living in peace.

That's just a part of what His Sabbath, His Holy Day means to me.
May He bless you all with wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

Peace.

They had the Mosaic Sabbath under Joshua, but no rest. Interesting.

Hebrews 4:8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.

I remember what the Pastor of the church in Brownsville where they had the huge revival in the 90's said. He said before the revival he would work 80 hours weeks to try to make gains for the Kingdom of God in people's lives. He would see some gains in his work as a pastor.

For example , many pastor's spend hundreds of hours counseling one person in order to help them break free of an addiction or hundreds of hours to help another reconcile their marriage. Or hundreds of hours to help another receive healing for emotional wounds.

But after revival hit , they had so many thousands of converts that they had to call the church down the street that was another denomination and ask them to help them with all of the converts. People were instantly healed and set free.

I agree with the previous poster that the passage in Hebrews is speaking to the issue of the finished work of the cross. We are not trying to work to come up with some other solution to what Jesus has accomplished. As if there is this plan B in place that we are working at to make up for some lack in what Jesus did.

The problem though is that much of the modern church is not experiencing the rest spoken about which is the rest of faith. They are experiencing the frustration and burnout that the Pastor in Brownsville experienced prior to the revival. In other words people trying to do the work of the Holy Spirit is the exhausting work that many engage in.

But the finished work of the cross provides much more than salvation for our souls someday in the distant future when we go to heaven. It provides a victorious life in the here and now. But how ?

One aspect of the rest is because it is done out of love.It is less tedious to do something out of love than it is to do it out of duty.

But I think it goes much deeper than that. The rest is because not only do we do our works for The Lord out of love. The rest is found because it is the Holy Spirit who does the works through us.

In other words , we do not do those works alone. They are done in partnership with The Holy Spirit. With him doing the work and us being along for the ride.

It is the life in the Spirit which is the life of rest. That place in faith where we are just along for the ride.

As the scripture says ,

19 For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”

and also ,

“In Him we live and move and have our being.” Acts 17:28

So, when he says for I through the law am dead to the law but alive to God, does that mean that the ten commandments of God are no longer in effect since Christ died?
,

The 10 commandments are still in effect, but when we allow Christ to live in us, God's laws become incorporated into who we are and what we believe and we put obedience to God above even our very life.

My death would not offend God. Me flounting His laws does. Jesus repriortizes things.

So, when he says for I through the law am dead to the law but alive to God, does that mean that the ten commandments of God are no longer in effect since Christ died?

God's Commandments are very much in effect. But the question is what power do the commandments have over a dead man ? The sentence of violating the law of God is death.

Or to put it another way. The Gospel is not the message that God just decided to forget about the consequences of sin. The true message is the opposite. the true message says that the commandments matter and the violation of those commandments brings death.

The gospel is not the diminishing of sin or the death that sin brings. It is the exaltation of grace and the life that grace brings. In other words , someone died for me and took my penalty. When I give up my old identity and choose to identify with Christ , then I am free from the consequences since the penalty has already been paid.

This concept is in our legal system.

I remember watching a movie a while back that was about the concept of double jeopardy in the law. In the movie this lady is framed by her husband for his murder. He fakes his own death and frames her. She goes to prison and does the sentence for murdering him. When she gets out she seeks revenge. She tracks him down and murders him for real . They are unable to prosecute her because she was already previously convicted of murdering him and served her sentence. A dark plot and certainly sensationalized for dramatic effect. I am not sure if it is 100% accurate legally speaking but it does draw upon the legal concept of double jeopardy. The penalty is only required once.

From wikipedia

Double jeopardy is a procedural defence that forbids a defendant from being tried again on the same (or similar) charges following a legitimate acquittal or conviction.

So the issue is not whether or not it is still a crime to break the law. the issue is whether or not the penalty for that crime has been paid or not. Breaking God's commands is still a sin. But the penalty for that sin is paid for us already if we are in Christ.

This is a totally separate issue from the issue of what parts of the law pertain to non jews. That issue is argued on the basis of whether or not the law applies to all people.

That is a vastly different matter than the Gospel message which admits we are sinners worthy of death and that our penalty has been satisfied in Christ. One admits the crime , the other argues that the crime never really took place.

So there are two parts to the issue. The one part is whether it is a sin to violate certain commands. The other is the issue of whether the penalty for sin has been paid.

We may differ on some of the details. I am not sure. But we agree on this point. There is such a thing as commands which apply to all people. Otherwise things like murder and stealing would not be sins. Obviously there are commandments of God which we are all required to obey even today or we find ourselves to be sinning.

The question of whether the Ten Commandments apply to Gentiles is a complicated one with much debate on both sides throughout the centuries of Church history. Clearly a moral code does apply to the gentiles. But is the same specific commandments that pertained to Israel ?

My opinion is that the principles applly to all people because Israel was called by God to be a light to the nations. A called out people who were to be an example for the rest of the world to look upon so that they could see what holiness looks like. Holiness looks like someone separated to God who does things God's way and not their own way. That is a good description of Jesus . Israel was a representation of who Jesus is. So is the church. God's character has not changed. We are still called to represent who he is by living a holy life.
