  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

rum-metusalem-629.jpg

I bought this Rum at Bevmo today for $35 bucks, a splurge for me during this obama depression.

First impressions, not disappointed, very smooth neat. I tried a little bit neat, but then I poured more on the rocks as I drink most of my hard booze this way. Very smooth, nice buzz after a short while. Flavors of vanilla, oak, butter, molasses, spices. Overall a solid purchase.

Impressive bottle, the flavors described sold me, I'll purchase one.

Well, everytime I see the popularity of this thread , I feel ashamed.
It would be much more edifying to the brethren to talk about something else. REGARDLESS of whether it is right or wrong.

JoY

But surreptitiously, in other words you imply, drinking is something that good Christians do not do.

I guess the case could be made that it's inappropriate in this forum. As to talking about something else there are just so many threads that have covered virtually every facet of Reformed Theology over the years here that many regular subscribers grow a little weary of the same subjects over and over again. A new subscriber can go to the Ask a Calvinist area for information or do a search for any particular subject with hundreds of results in the archives.

I'm sorry you feel ashamed about the thread, God bless.

I think I'll join you. I will also be lighting up a cigar, and I don't even like cigars, but pharisees/legalists make me want to drink and smoke even more.

GQ, remember not to abuse it. We have freedom to enjoy life but never to abuse it. I like to talk about pipes, cigars and alcohol more then I partake. It would be nice if this forum had more going on but it doesn't, so we make do with other conversations about food and drink.

My sentiment also.

Amen. We could always fight about things like baptism, lapsarianism, and apologetic methods, but ya know, I'd rather not and apparently neither do most folks here. So drinks it is. :D

On that note, my usual standby:

Inexpensive, but great Polish vodka.

I haven't had vodka in a long, long time. Is there much difference in the brands and what do you look for in a good vodka?

Vodka is like my daily bread (I guess something I picked up from the Russians in the years of Orthodoxy). So I go for inexpensive, but good. Not too expensive, but not Gordon's (yuck!). The local store here for the longest time had this great vodka called Polar Bear on sale, so it was my default for at least a couple of years. But the sale finally ended so Sobieski has become my second choice.

I can't say I'm really a connoisseur in that I could tell you what to look for other then it dosen't taste like rubbing alcohol. I pretty much just drink it straight up (preferably on the rocks) or with water (plain or seltzer), so the taste is important. I guess if I had to go all wine tasting style, maybe, smooth, a touch of floral flavor, and a medium thickness (not too syrupy and not too watery). I generally like to try anything that's not bottom shelf as long as it's it's not overpriced. I had this Swedish one a couple weeks ago and thought it had a pretty good flavor. So really, as long as it's not Gordon's or Smirnoff, I'm good and thankful to the Lord for the blessing of sweet sweet vodka that makes happy the hearts of man! :D

I hear really good things about Punch Cigars, from pipe smokers and cigar buffs. I don't know if they are legal in the States or not since they are Cuban, in Canada we can smoke them, I've been looking for them.

Could you name some others in the Gordon's price range for us? I've been working on paring my tobacco with drink.

Sadly, no I can't because I just do know a really good one in that range. I suppose I could try out some bottom shelf stuff in the future....hummmm.
