  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

OK, why are you here?

I have come here with an open mind. Me myself do have a sort of third person view on religions. In that sense I am here to learn about christian beliefs and fundementals. I came here asking as both an experiment and a returning jesture. The experiment part was to see what the inital reaction to the apearance of an atheist would be among the populus of this site. When i say a returning jesture i mean that i can learn things from you and vice verce.

Is there an aspect of Christianity that intrigues you?

Why yes, one thing that interests me is more on the true reasons behind people becoming christians. I understand that some people claim its because "god is real" but i wish to go deeper. In my beleif its based upon hope. I understand how unwelcoming death can be, i became depressed for a while when i came to the conclusion that there is nothing after life, for example. I do want to know if its all based on the obsclusion and rejection of a meaningless life and instead on the fundement that we will go to a glorious place after death. I believe it is based around reason where there isnt onw, an answer in a hopeless void of life, then death.

So my main question is: why are you christian?

I'll start right off then, with the most obvious one: Why are you an athiest?

Ive always been into sciences at a young age so thats the first thing.

I never was a Christian in most respects, i was always agnostic, open to the concept of god. Itwas later in life i came to the realisation. I hated how politics would not allow gay marrage and how most conflicts are based on religion as a whole that i became Atheist.

Do note that before I never did truly believe in god as an entity but held it as a maybe. As i got more into science and religious stories i realised that i dont believe that god would do so many evils, that we, those specks of dust in the universe, are of higher meaning at all.

Both these social and scientific aspects told me that god isnt something i want to believe in.

Are you psychologically prepared to resist last minute conversion in a "white tunnel" experience on your deathbed?

No because I believe that wont happen, and I stand by the fact it wont. And if IF it happens I would not convert. A god who controls peoplem would not base going to heaven on what religion you follow, but on how you live your life, otherwise that would be really stupid.

So my main question is: why are you christian?

Some interesting thoughts. It reminds me of a question raised by C.S. Lewis. Paraphrased, it is something like: Would you still seek God even if He didn't promise you an afterlife? The idea is to point toward selfless love - love where you're not seeking a person because of what you can get from them.

I'm not sure I'm there yet, but the "afterlife" isn't really why I became Christian.

When I was young (about 13), I flat out didn't believe in God. I was trying to work up the courage to tell my dad I was going to leave the church. Suddenly he decided to switch churches (from Methodist to Lutheran), and asked me to give it a chance. FYI, my older sister was about to leave as well. I really connected with the pastor at the new church, and something changed. I remember riding my bike one day and playing out this scenario in my head where I tried to force myself to believe God didn't exist - just like I had earlier. I failed.

I can't explain it very well, but I just couldn't shake it.

So, I figured, if I'm going to do this "God" thing, I want to dig as deep as I possibly can. Let's turn over all those rocks and look at the slimy underbelly everone claims is there. Let's ask the tough questions. Let's actually engage God - wrestle with Him the way Jacob did. The resulting intellectual stimulation has kept me engaged ever since. The more I discover, the more "elegant" (to use the mathematical term) God's answers seem to me. He knows how to keep me hooked.

Erm lets just say those LSU guys becuase I like Acronyms
Acronym for Alabama is UA.

How do you think God decides which team to help? Millions of fans on both sides all praying for a victory. Must put a lot of strain on him. Of course when Teebow when down in flames a few years ago there was no doubt which team had god on their side.

Well in my oppinion he doesnt, because he doesnt exist. Its all a matter of the players playing. I find it very Arrogant to assume that any of the teams would get some divine favor at all.
