Let's settle this thing once and for all.

Seriously, let's discuss it and share what we understand about
tithing. When it began, why it was practiced, when/if it was discontinued.

And fight NICE guys.

Thanks.
I'll begin.
Up until recently, I had tithed for the past 20+ years.
LAtely I have not been "tithing" because some folks here
convinced me that it MIGHT not be a good thing to do.
(went through the same thing with tongues a few years
back too. Stopped praying in tongues because of what
people here said )

So for me, this is a very serious issue.

Thanks in advance.

Paul said the law was a shadow of things to come, but not the very image of those things.

This means the law was a sign given to reflect something else. Just as the Lord told Israel it shall be a sign between me and you.

So what does the sign of the tithe reflect?

It is the Lords portion.

What is the Lords portion?

It is his people.

The great thing IMO about the Christian life is that we are not bound to give God 10% of our income. Rather, we have the liberty to give more, or less, as we love God. I am inclined to think that most give more than 10%, but statistics tell me otherwise. The bottom line is that God knows our hearts and what matters is that we give both cheerfully and seriously.

Tithing began with Moses and the Law. Before that, Abraham did tithe only one single time in his entire life. Nobody before Abraham did tithe. Ismael and Isaac did not tithe. Esau and Jacob did not tithe. Jocob made a promes to beging tithing but never kep it. The sons of Israel never tithe.

It was practiced to give financial support to the Levy, because they did not inherit land. That is why tithe was only over the land, and not over any other economical activity. And it was for maintenance of the sacrifices and the sanctuary.

One ended the sacrifices and the sanctuary, tithing became unnecesary. Once the Aaronic priest being substituted by Christ, the tithing cames to an end.

Giving is great, to the poor, or if one feels led to share with a certain ministry, but we are not under compulsion.

There are no NT teachings on tithing.

The tithe teachers never talk about how Paul worked not to be a burden, and the little he got from some churches, he said he did not talk about his need, or as J. Vernon McGee said, Paul did not send out an sos in Phil 4:11, or in 4;17, he said he did not seek it, and called it a gift, meaning it was not a demand compulsion.

Here is a great site.

It is nice to know your personal opinion; but I believe that this thread is not about personal feelings or thots; but about biblical doctrine. IMO the Bible teach that Christians can not answer to God´s love by giving money. IMO this is insulting the price He paid in the cross. Also IMO it is a easy way to get away from our responsabilities and compromises...by giving money we free our selves from giving us selves.

Jesus did some teaching concerning money and God. Jesus says that God dont want our money as Caesar do. God do not want sacrifices (including tithe) from us. But Jesus did an specific teaching concerning the end of tithe. He was criticizing very hard the pharisees that tithe. In that context Jesus days that it (tithing) was necessary. Tithing was necessary. Tithe is not necessary, but was necessary. Why? Jesus did not explain why it is no longer necesary; but we know. Tithe was necessary for keeping the service of the sanctuary e¡and the sacrifices. Both did arrive to an end. Jesus is telling to the disciples that the pharisees tithe comes to an end, ferw days before his crucifixion. In the cross, all sacrifices ended, and the courtine of the sanctuari broke open. that is why tithing - according to Jesus - was necesary and it is no longer.

In Acts 15:28-29 we have the Holy Spirit in person, not inspiring the author of the book but the Holy Spirit in person prohibiting from teaching any of the Moses Law. That includes tithing. The Holy Spirit did prohibit christians to practice tithe as well as all others Moses Law.

In the USA there is not state-funded Church. Let me use an example: in Germany both Catholicism and Lutheranism are the "state churches" which means that on your taxes you check Lutheran or Roman Catholic and 10% of your taxes go to that church. In a society such as that, which existed until the notion of Church-State separation, tithing would have gone to those who needed it in the local community. Those who are low on rent, need to buy food, etc etc.

Now in a world where the Church is not funded by the state than tithing is a bit more necessary and practical just for the church to survive and pay the bills and salaries.

I say tithe. If unable to tithe with your checkbook than tithe with your time. If you are truly blessed than tithe with both your checkbook and your time.

You could have titled the thread : Tithing - the last thread needed on the topic :)

Seriously , this will not "settle this thing once and for all" for several reasons . The main reason is that you did not provide which definition of "tithing" you are using for the thread .

I would suggest that you would not do or discontinue to do things because of what people say . Proceed only from what the Lord tells you .

Edited to add : Since someone already brought up government involvement in "tithing" , I wanted to add that I am a citizen of the USA and they do tax for the things that some definitions of "tithing" include . That is , a certain amount goes to the poor and unfortunate .

Sunlover, PLEASE don't stop speaking in tongues because of what people say on this site, That is dangerous. I am worried about that, and that you take what people say here so to heart. Tithing is scriptural. Weather we follow it or not is up to us.

Actually Jesus teaches that tithing have came to an end. The Apostles and the Holy Spirit did prohibit to teach tithing. Paul was against tithing.

No, Jesus Christ did no such thing.

Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. 40 Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.
42 “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Luke 11:39-42

By the way the gift of Tongues is one of the most comforting and useful gifts, other then love, which God has given to me.

I will explain my teaching, which came from Jesus, about tithing. Jesus came and completed the Old Law, and tithing was included in that completion. Jesus asked us to give not ten percent but one hundred percent.

Jesus told us we could not be disciple of his unless we gave up all our possessions.

There is much scripture that tells us we are not to store up for our future. Jesus told of a man that did store up for his future, and called the man a fool.

Christians were meant to live together in community where everything was owned in common.

Now we heve a revealing thruth. Tithe has nothing to do with doctrine, Bible, or apostolic teachings. tithe isn a smart solution for a financial need. That is all. Tithe is a administration rule made by men in orther to provide money to the church. No conection at all with the biblical doctrine.

The biblical doctrine states that we (and the leaders of the church9 shall not concern for our needs, since the Father do concern allready and He will provide. Taking steps to provide our selfes is oposite to expecting in God. Taking steps by teching false doctrine is a deeper sin.

The survival of the church do not depend on the money we have. God need no money to make church survive. Money has not the power to survivive Christ church.

Yes he did. Jesus says that tithing was necessary. that is pass tence. it was, and is not longer necessary. Yes Jesus did.
