  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Did WELS come up with a new bible version to use for worship? I understand they must change to a different version for their publishing and what not. Also, which Bible would YOU recommend?

I haven't read enough of the AAT to recommend it, but I would opt for the ESV or the NASB, even the NKJV, but I haven't read that in a while so I am unfamiliar wtih it. I'd vote we use the new Lutheran Study Bible in ESV. Since a lot of WELS people do buy materials and books from CPH, the publishing house of the LCMS, this would make it an easier transition, we wouldn't be reading the ESV in one place the the NIV 2011, in another place.

The WELS is looking at other translations besides the NIV 2011, but I get the feeling they will go with the NIV 2011, for the simple reason that people are used to the NIV 1984 and this new version is in a language and format people are comfortable with. I think it's a huge mistake as was using the NIV, but I wasn't a Lutheran when the NIV was adopted for use in that church. I still don't use it unless I have to.
