Which OS are you using?

I have dual booted with 7 and Ubuntu,but it started to give me the message "no such device" at start up, and would not let me go any further...I'm thinking of getting a second hand machine and dedicating that one to Ubuntu.

Hmm. Looks like I voted OpenSolaris in this poll. Times have changed. Using Ubuntu on my desktop and Arch Linux on my server. To be fair, I would have used OpenSolaris on my server, but it doesn't support the hardware.

Dual booting isn't good at the best of times - even though this laptop in working on now has Win 7 / Linux Mint. The "no such device" error is basically saying it cant find the partition you installed Ubuntu on. I've known people to have USB memory sticks or external hard drives attached to computer whilst installing Linux and they choose these devices by accident, once the device is removed it cant be found at boot time.

Good call to get a second machine to play with as dual booting can lead to no booting!

As a lot of people do out there and there is nothing fundamentally wrong with that either. XP still does as much as Windows 7 albeit not as pretty.

Nothing wrong with it until Microsoft stops supporting it.

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my new computer (accidentally erasing all my data in the process but that's because Arch told me different HDD identifiers than Ubuntu. Hooray for Dropbox!). Unity interface is ... interesting. But way too limiting. There's also a bug with Chrome where it doesn't minimize properly. That annoys me even more.

Gnome Shell is the better of the two IMHO but that is in it's early days and needs at least a couple of minor revisions to come right, but I like it!

Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with Unity if the following was true:
A) You could move the dock around
B) The Ubuntu button allowed some way of accessing the "real" start menu categories.

I could even live with the sideways dock. It's the lack of a "real" start menu that made me turn it off. I need to find my newly installed application (excuse me, "app") but it wouldn't let me without using the search feature. That is a no-no.
