I didn't notice anything that contradicts what I know... there was stuff mentioned that I hadn't heard before, but I can't pass judgment on whether it's true or not and have no reason to believe it isn't.

The end quote of Shah Waliyyullaah though... that's just his personal speculation. Him saying he thought certain people were unique revivers of the religion doesn't make them so... (not saying they were or weren't.. just that that's an opinion statement.)

I wrote a play once (a few years ago) based very closely on a story from the life of 'Umar ibn 'Abdul 'Aziz for my daughter's fifth grade class to act out at a school event. It turned out beautifully if I say so myself. :)
It will take a while to remember his name. Arabic names are always so long.

Actually sister, I do believe there is a hadeeth which states that Allah raises a reviver every 100 years in this Islamic Ummah. So Shah Waliullah statement is from the Sunnah.

I will have to find this hadeeth for you

In these times the scholars have said that Shaykh Albani was the reviver of our era.

And just so people dont think that you have to be an arab to be a scholar, Albani was a white man from would you believe it Albania!

Regards

"Surely, Allah will send for this Ummah at the advent of every one hundred years a person who will renovate its religion for it."

[Sunan Abu Dawood]

Yes... I wasn't talking about the fact that there ARE revivers... just mentioning that it's Shah Waliyyullah's opinion on WHO some of those revivers were. WHO they are is not something we can establish, really. Wallaahu a'lam.

I take it there are few non-Arabs?

Actually there isnt, there are many esteemed scholars today and from the past who have not been Arab.

From Pakistan and India in particular there have been some great scholars of hadeeth

From what was known as Persia, the greatest scholars on the Sunnah have emerged from there

Would I have to become a "scholar" to gain respect from Muslims?

:mmh: LOL

We respect knowledge of Scripture and its people. And we respect other good things too. What is good in each of us, I respect... what is bad in each of us, I don't hold in high regard.

It is reported that the last sermon ‘Umar b. ‘Abd Al-‘Aziz – Allâh have mercy on him – delivered was as follows:

He praised Allâh and said, “You were not created in vain, nor will you be left without purpose. Verily, you have an appointed time in which Allâh – the Most High – will come down to judge you. Wretched and ruined will he be who leaves the mercy of Allâh and is denied a Garden whose width is that of the heavens and Earth. Know you not that no one will be safe tomorrow save one who is wary of today and fears it; and sells the transitory for what will remain, and the little for the plenty, and fear in exchange for security [in the hereafter]? See you not that you are in the loins of the dead, to be taken by those who remain after you, until all matters return to the Best of Inheritors? Every day, [in the funerals] you accompany those returning to Allâh the Mighty and Sublime, having spent their time, until you hide them in a crevice in the ground, in the belly of a bare and unfurnished hole, having parted from their loved ones, stroking the dirt and facing their accounts. Now, they are dependent on their deeds, free of what they left behind, in need of [the deeds] they put before them. So fear Allâh before the time He appointed is up and death descends upon you. This is what I have to say.” He then lifted the edge of his garment over his face and wept profusely, and made everyone around him weep.

I came across this story in a Jewish encyclopedia, between the second Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab (referred to as Omar below) and a Jew and thought it would be worth sharing

"Characteristic of this attitude toward the Jew is a story—somewhat fabulous, it is true—told of a house in Busrah. When Omar's governor in this conquered city desired to build a mosque, the site of a Jew's house appeared to him to be suitable for the purpose. In spite of the objections of the owner, he had the dwelling torn down, and built the mosque in its place. The outraged Jew went to Medina to tell his grievance to Omar, whom he found wandering among the graves, poorly clad and lost in pious meditation. When the calif had heard his complaint, anxious to avoid delay and having no parchment with him, he picked up the jaw-bone of an ass (donkey) and wrote on it an urgent command to the governor to tear down his mosque and rebuild the house of the Jew. This spot was still called "the house of the Jew" up to modern times"

I do believe this story is also related in our books of hadith

I remember when we used to waste paper when we were little, my mom would tell us stories about how 'Umar was the first Caliph not to even care about the socially accepted norms of sending official looking documents. Even if a prestigious person sent him a letter, instead of sending a fancy one back (as would be expected from the leader of a political super-power), he'd turn it over and write on the back, or fill up any empty space on the front, or whatever, and send his reply that way. When his advisors tried to convince him that it looked bad, he would reply that he didn't want God to ask him about wasted paper/parchment.

That does sound pretty good. :)

Not sure about that, but it is a good story about conserving our resources, otherwise we end up writing on grass again. :D

Thats quite funny but what i said is just a term of respect for whenever we talk about the Companions of the Prophet (may Allah send Peace and Blessings upon him)
