  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Matthew 6:24
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other."

I know that's in the context of God vs money...but seems so applicable here too...

...and in the context of employment, serving the government, being submissive to your spouse, your pastor (which my example is about), to the police/law.

So no, it doesn't work. But I appreciate you admitting you took it out of context. And I already mentioned that the Bishop is an icon of Christ.

Paul considered himself a "spiritual father" (see his use of the term "father/son" in the epistles).

Having Paul as a spiritual father did not abrogate the Fatherhood of God; likewise in the instance of a bishop.

Unfortunately, any person claiming Christ can fall into legalism and only emphasize religious rules and regulations for achieving both salvation and spiritual growth.

“Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: ‘Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!’? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.” Colossians 2:20-23

I'm not a Seventh Day Adventist who thinks meat is bad either.

And what does this have to do with the Dormition of the Theotokos anyways?

There are lots of pics of pretty church buildings on this thread

Those Christians are always making great buildings for their God. Some get it and some do not.

To keep this On Topic, does anyone know the oldest Church and has something regarding Mary after her Assumption?

Hint: it has a story regarding one of the Apostles and it still stands today.

Sure, I like a good story :)

Matt 28:13 saying, "say ye!, that his Disciples having come by night stole Him, we being asleep;
14 and if this be heard by the governor, we will persuade him, and you keep free from anxiety."
15 And they having received the money, did as they were taught, and this account was spread abroad among Jews till this day.

2 Thess 2:11 and because of this, the God is sending them an in-working/energeian <1753> of-deception/planhV <4106>, into the to believe them to the falsehood

I guess it could be said that some make and use all churches for The God above and other Gods as well.
Im not disagreeing at all brother, just agreeing and adding clarity.

I was talking about Catholicism which has One God and not any other. Maybe you are referring to the Greeks?

Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar

According to ancient local tradition, soon after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, Saint James was preaching the Gospel in Spain, but was disheartened because of the failure of his mission.[4] Tradition holds that on 2 January 40 AD,[3] while he was deep in prayer by the banks of the Ebro,[6] the Mother of God appeared to him and gave him a small wooden statue of herself and a column of jasper and instructed him to build a church in her honor:[4]
This place is to be my house, and this image and column shall be the title and altar of the temple that you shall build.

Today the Pillar still stands where James built the Church in Mary's honor:

Interesting
There is also a book of Revelation that shows John receiving the Revelation shortly after the ascension of Jesus while on Mt Tabor....:)

CHURCH FATHERS: Revelation of St. John

After the taking up of our Lord Jesus Christ, I John was alone upon Mount Tabor, where also He showed us His undefiled Godhead; and as I was not able to stand, I fell upon the ground, and prayed to the Lord, and said: O Lord my God, who hast deemed me worthy to be Your servant, hear my voice, and teach me about Your coming........................

Yes, I think we all honor the Apostles. As a Catholic we honor Mary as well.

I am neither Catholic or Greek. I disagee with all and agree with all concerning this one thing:

I was Just saying that going into church doesn't make one A Christian any more than going into a McDonald's makes you a hamburger. So i hear anyways.

And also that many go to church or build a Church or even a Ministry that Can be considered a Church, i think, for selfish self righteous hypocritical reasons and to deny that would be to deny both reality and Scriptural integrity. To deny it would be to deny the Word of Our God who is the Father Of our Master, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Im not getting upity, just speaking more clearly.

And I respect you brother, so please dont take my words in the wrong way.

I was born in a Protestant church and as a teenager became Agnostic and then in my twenties started soul searching for God. I was 30 when I was baptized and confirmed as a Roman Catholic. My searching for God led me to the Roman Catholic Church where I studied scripture and then the history of Christianity where I found an enjoyment in being confirmed with my beliefs through the writings of the ECFs. The reason I sharfe this is because I once thought and spoke much like you and so I think I was where you are now when I was younger.

I am not offended though I know some will be offended.

For me these Basilicas are testaments to God's Church here on earth. When I see the White House in the USA I see a huge building for it's time and know it is because the President is given great honor and so too his home is one of reflection of such honor.

A Basilica is the House of the Lord and so to me deserves greater honor than any other building in the world because it is where we house the Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. And yes, I once did not believe the Eucharist was the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus. But my readings and prayers have confirmed the Real Presense to be Real. It has also allowed me to honor Jesus Christ's mother, Mary.

But you disagree... that is fine. But if you have a contention it is best understood and accepted with an X, Y, and Z argument.

I hope this is not too Off Topic.

Who are the RC's? Answer me that and maybe i can know what you mean. Radical Christians maybe? I'm really not sure brother of What an RC is.

Maybe sometimes its Good to not have a fancy Church building or maybe even any building for that matter i think.

Jesus liked the outdoors allot i hear. So did His apostles. But He gave respect to the Temple and called for its destruction also according to prophecy, He hated money changers and business men who loved money instead of worship and mercy in His fathers Temple and His temple is Found within Men not buildings , i think.

RC is Roman Catholic.

Jackthecatholic, i once gave the White house Respect, but i don't anymore. I don't make the mistake of putting any president above any other anymore. And i give them all the Honor God says to give them.

The temple is inside the Man and not the building correct?

And if by Eucharist you mean the Lords supper known as the bread and blood that is eaten in church for the remembrance of Our Lord and His sacrifice, i agree that its important, i never said it wasn't.

It was linked from New Advent which is a good RC site and they have it under Apocrypha so that is where it belongs.
Ok thanks

And with that, I am now withdrawing from here for awhile
