  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it okay to listen to music by artists who make bad music. For example if I want to listen to an appropriate song by the black eyed peas or christina aguilera, is it alright to listen to it even though the black eyed peas promote sexual immorality and curse and christina aguilera promotes bisexuality?

To me God works in every aspect of my life, especially music. Sometimes I'll be just going through stations and seeking clarity on a subject or confirmation and there it is, mid song. The song itself isn't what's important it's that God used it at that time for a message to me. That being said, trash in is trash out and if you listen to a bunch of cursing and sexual stuff it's corrupting your subconscious. But no I don't advocate avoidance of something because that doesn't allow God to work his miracles in everything. The Bible says, It's not what goes in the mouth that makes one unclean, it's what comes out and I think the same goes for in our eyes and ears as well. Whilke all of that is good for an individual, we are all called to witness, so don't let it be a stumbling block to your brother. Summed up, your walk with God is personal, how you hear him is personal, how you witness is a reflection of how well you listened and what you listened to.

Romans 12.2:

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect." NRSV

What you allow in your mind will stay there, it will never go away.
You are a new creation in Yeshua, so why would you dump trash where He has just cleaned?

Tune out the secular and tune in the Godly! There are to many kinds of good Christian music available to want to listen to what you already know is harmful!

It's NOT OK! Music, lyrics etc conditions your mind and brain, even on a subconscious level to think and view things in a particular way. It's a form of "brainwashing" and "psychological conditioning".

Stay away from earthly music!

In 1 Cor 6:12, Paul reminds us that

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.

I think later in that passage Paul discusses "Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body."

It's lawful for you to, but it's like, why do you want to? You could be mastered by this stuff and it can send you into bondage. Like the others have said, throw off the old and put on the new. Don't get caught up in legally what you're allowed to do or not, but listen and obey the Holy Spirit, who I'm positive does not want you to listen to music like that.

I will tell you something interesting what happened to me. When I was 33 years of age, my neighbour shared Jesus and the Gospel with me and I invited Jesus into my heart. As I woke up the next morning, I had a very strong desire and urge to break my whole record collection, which included secular and worldly music, even Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and other artist.

I was new to Bible, new to God, and NOBODY encouraged me to break and destroy my record collection, it was just a deep conviction in my heart and came from God.

So that's how I know that God does not want you to listen to that crap as it will lead your mind a stray and feed your mind with garbage lyrics written and sung by unbelievers and antichristians.

What can an unbeliever, atheist, ahtichrist and someone who doesn't believe in Jesus as the Son of God, offer you through their music? Think about it.

A message from God. If God can't work through sinners then we're all in a little more trouble than we'd like to admit. If God doesn't want us to converse with unbelievers and atheists and they hold no value, why do we spread God's word? Did Jesus come for the sinners or the saved? Did he die for one or the other or for both? In what the Lord has revaled and used in me, You have to allow for God's voice and God's miracle by keeping an open heart, not losing your heart to something emphatically. The Holy Spirit covicts each of us in line with our calling and our purpose in serving God. While God convicted you the eschew your music collection, that's only aplicable to you. We shouldn't do his thinking for him. Myles search your heart and the scripture and God will reveal what he wills for you.

What would Jesus say?

We are to guard our hearts! Hankering after secular music with lyrics that promote and laud sin doesn't honor God.

We are told to honor God with our bodies and to acknowledge Him in everything we do. Where the mind goes, the heart follows.

Your answer is in there.

Getting rid of my secular music/DVD/game collection is something I've been planning on doing for a while since I came to Christ, I've just got started. I consider some of the stuff I used to have an affront to God and to my soul. It feels wonderful when you get rid of it, it's like a weight is lifted off you. =)

I'm just getting into Christian music. I think it's great. ^^ My faves are:

Audio Adrenaline - Get Down, Ocean Floor
Big Daddy Weave - You Found Me
Third Day - God of Wonders, Born Again
David Crowder Band - Oh Praise Him

I don't know what your taste in music is, but you might like them too. =) I didn't know that about the Black Eyed Peas and Christina Aguilera, I planned on getting rid of my music by them anyway but now I'm doubly convinced. =P Thanks. =)

I disagree with your whole post!

You do not understand how Satan operates to pollute the minds of Christians, and that's very sad and dangerous for you.

It's closer to the topic than any verse I've had quoted to me so far, but you're right it doesn't say that exactly.
Let's see how music that's used even to worship false idols is used to glorify God. Farmiliar with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego? They wouldn't worship the idol that Nebuchadnezzar commanded upon the playing of various music. Did they cover their ears or rebuke him for playing music for worshiping idols? We have no indication they did that, merely that they heard it and didn't bow down. They just witnessed and were persecuted for not worhiping idols. What did them listening to idolatrous music, but not letting it corrupt them into sinning gain for the Lord? Well the heathen king said "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way." If you need a reference it's Daniel Chapter 3
What a victory for the Lord. Amen!
Was it God's will that they hear idolatrous music? IDK, but it sure was part of his plan and a mighty witness!

We can see from 2 Samuel 6:16 that playing only praise hymn can cause hatred and jealousy to flare up in unbeliever's hearts. What is to gain if we assist in hardening other's hearts?

Matthew 23:13-14 (NIV)
13"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.
2 Sam 6:5 , 1 Chr 13:8 - both clearly speak to teh diversity of music
There are countless (far too many to list) PSALMS about making loud and joyful noises

1 Corinthians 9:21-23 (New International Version)
21To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. 22To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. 23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

Philippians 1:15-18 (New International Version)
15It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.[a] 18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

All 3 of the above are clear indicators that all possible means to share and minister to unbelievers should be used. But you're correct neitherone of them are specific to referencing music. Can't we minister and reach others through music though?

All I can do is present the scripture it's up to each for their own interpretation. I"m not contibuting to furthing an arguement unless there's new info presented or you can address specific points with scripture or at lease sound reasoning.

Oh and on the sidetrack where you decided to attack my spiritual walk with God instead of addressing points, I'm aware of the tools of Satan. Satan is the author of temptation and craving. He tells us to starve ourselves, while God wants us to conform our wants to God's wants to have a full life.
John 10:10 (New International Version)

10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

You can kill and destroy all that is old like the old wineskin, but that doesn't mean that the old wineskin is now useless. To waste the old wineskin because it couldn't be used to make new wine is not Biblical stewardship, because truly all of who we are (even the inequity and sin) can be used for God's purposes. Now please keeep to the post and stop attacking me personally. We're all here to fellowship.

Thanks you and God Bless-
-Dave

I do allow room for God to work his miracles through even the vilelest songs. I don't listento them, but I don't avoid them. You have a choice to allow the world to corrupt you by focusing and giving creedance to the things of this world.

Proverbs 16:6
Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD a man
avoids evil.

Proverbs 16:17

The highway of the upright
avoids evil; he who guards his way guards his life

1 Thessalonians 5:22

Avoid every kind of
evil.

Avoid sin, not sinners. Sure, listening to something that convinces you to embrace immorality is unhealthy. Listening to something that happens to be performed by a person who is a sinner is not. The distinction is in what you do, not in who you associate. In short, if you are okay with listening to the music described in the OP, then there is nothing wrong with that.

So all music that isn't in the Christian section is labeled evil... and thus sinful? What about classical music? Jazz? What about Carlos Santana? Dave Matthews? I'm glad there is music in the world that is not completely God focused, but focused on positive and good things. If believers only had God oriented music and unbelievers only had "devil worshiping music" It would be a lot harder to minister to the unbeliever and the devil would just be able to beat down on us from more angles. We have to be careful not to fall into the Devil's trap here and claim everything we disagree with is of the Devil, lest we exalt our own knowledge and self-opinions and become proud. The Devil would like nothing more than to run the "all are sinners saved and unsaved alike" line out of every Church so that they may all die of pride and divisiveness. Do I think we should listen to heathenistic music that is against God, no of course not. I'll just leave it there. Thanks you Dies-I. I've shown scripture and tried to show the difference between not-about-God and evil, I leave it for you to decide.
