It is great because politicians understand child inappropriate contentography. By playing that card, we can get them to act, and start blocking sites. And once they have done that, we can get them to start blocking file sharing sites

IFPI’s child inappropriate content strategy « Christian Engström, Pirate MEP

They aren't even hiding the fact they are using the pretense of protecting children to try to enforce legislation that would not otherwise fly.

Of course, they weren't the first to think of doing such.
The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceive......d as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation. Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler, Page 403

So, if people are not willing to allow filters for file sharing sites normally, is it wrong to try to use the pretense of protecting children to set up such filters?

Many anti-piracy groups are known for ethics just as questionable as the piracy groups they are against. MediaDefender was one such company. It's been reorganized into a new company in order to hide its old reputation. This doesn't really surprise me.

Anyway, if governments started blocking file sharing sites, those who really wanted to get to them would just use a proxy anyway.

I love watching the government try to suppress internet freedom. If it wasn't so unethical it would be hilarious. Does anyone think that people who think the internet is a series of tubes will be able to keep up with ever changing technology? The government is always 3 steps behind and they always will be.

New technologies get old. As they get old they get more able to be controlled by government. It was that way with cars, radio, banking, and it will be with the internet too. Just wait and see. China already has a head start on it.

People will just start using things like TOR. China can't do anything about that. My brother used to help run a server specifically designed to allow people in China, Iran, and other such countries connect to the full internet by proxy. The government can make all the rules they want but if people want to get online, they will. If the government starts using violence against people for looking at certain websites, I think they'd find themselves dealing with a huge backlash. The gun polishers like to brag and fantasize about what they'd do when the ATF comes for their guns. But that's nothing compared to what will happen if the government comes to threaten people for loggin on to wikileaks or searching for the :wrong thing" on google. It just won't happen here.

Do you honestly think the government fears bloggers more than gun nuts? All they have to do is fine people for doing it and start garnishing wages, problem solved.

How will they know who's doing it? Like I said, there's always TOR and proxies and all that fun stuff. Officially, Chinese people can't blog freely or access the whole internet but that doesn't mean they ACTUALLY can't. Trust me, they do, I've seen it. The government can't fine you if they don't know you're the author.

And yes I think the government is more afraid of cameras than guns. They can deal with a gun. Using violence is one of the only things they are good at. But more and more people have cameras on them these days in the form of smart phones. Many of them upload the videos directly to the internet so their's no tape to destroy. Go ahead and smash my phone officer, the video already has 300 views on youtube. Yes I think the government is more afraid of bloggers with cameras than they are with gun owners, and I personally own 12 guns and have open carried hand guns in public. I'm the biggest pro-gun person you'll ever meet. But if we use them, or threaten to use them against the government, even in self defense, it is easy for them to paint us as the bad guy. But with a camera, it's obvious who the bad guy is. Even in some distopian future where it is obvious that using violence in self defense against the government is warranted, if you kill one jack booted thug, 10 more will show up and you will end up dead. It's more effective to destroy their image. They rely upon positive public perception to maintain the status quo. If you destroy their cloak of legitimacy and most people see them for what they really are, there's nothing they can do. They know that and that's why they fear bloggers with cameras more than they fear gun owners. Besides, gun owners are just posturing when they say "from my cold dead hands". When they JBTs come for your guns, you'll turn them in and so will everyone else. Maybe a few shots will be fired but not from you or me. It'll be some guy out in the boonies who they will quickly kill and then paint as a whack-job. The most that any gun owners will do is bury a few guns and then tell the officer that they dropped it in a lake on a hunting trip.

Maybe you're right.
