  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Seems like a lot of Europe has far more discriminating tastes in food than a lot of people in the States... :p

Yes, I think the high level of sugar and salt in our US diets overwhelms our taste buds.
And so, we have a real problem with epidemic diabetes and obesity.
Do the folks in Europe have less problems with obesity, diabetes, and heart problems?

I bake cookies and cakes and use far less sugar than advocated in those US cookbooks. I can see why the British call their cookies biscuits.

My husband and I like our cookies with just a tad of sugar, but whenever I bake cookies for the church, then I am forced to make them sweeter or the children will toss them in the trash.

I wish I could get used to diet pop. I just can't. It activates my gag reflex instantly.

I do not want to get used to diet pop.
It gives me a severe headache and nausea due to the aspartame.
I totally avoid it. The chemical taste is not at all pleasing.
If I am visiting a friend, and they offer it, I politely decline and ask for water if nothing else is available.

Agree with all of what you said. Even the first part, now that I've thought about it. I personally think all those chemicals are going to be shown to be carcinogenic one of these days. I said before that I wish I could get used to it just because pop is just so sugary, yet I drink it altogether too much...

I am curious as to how the diabetes rate compares. It wouldn't surprised me one bit to find out that the diabetes rate in the US is far above other countries.

Oh they are catching up on being fat too. About 1/3 of kids are now overweight. They're probably a bit behind on the Diabetes 2 curve but I'm sure if we give them a few years they'll catch up...
Fortunately the EU is still against GMOs so that's a plus... and very little HFCS around, but plenty of sugar.

Since I last checked
Scotland is the most obese country in Europe.
Czech Republic is the leanest.

I love the next statistic!
Leanest and most obese settlements of the United Kingdom:
Most Obese: Kingston upon Hull (South London)
Leanest: Kingston upon Thames (North-East England)

With an understanding of the diet and cultural heritage, it is possible to see how the South-East is more lean than the North. Fat rich foods such as pies and chips were popular with mill and mine workers as a source of cheap energy. Since the end of the Twentieth century such industry has ceased but the palette of the region has not changed.

Personally, if I were a dictator, I would place a tax on sugar and would give greater power to the food awareness sector. Also I would create state-run gyms and leisure centres, free of charge to tax-paying citizens.
Perhaps I've been following the UK Election too much! (results coming through as I type)

It is curious how the South-Western part of France, the largest producer and consumer of Foie Gras, has among the longest longevity of life in Europe Considering that Foie Gras is nearly entirely fat, it is remarkable until one bothers to read what sort of fat, namely unsaturated fat.

I am not condoning the liberal consumption of Foie Gras (though it is delicious if a little barbaric in its production), but just stating that fat does not equal human fat.

"People living in Le Gers, la Haute-Garonne and the surrounding areas, where duck fat, foie gras and confit take pride of place on the dinner table , have one of the lowest rates of death due to heart disease and the highest life expectancies in the whole of France". (Renaud, de Lorgeril, 1994, In " Le Régime santé " by Serge Renaud published by Odile Jacob).

Venison is delicious!
Extremely extremely low in fats and quite probably the highest protein meat.

As venison is expensive here I tend to eat a lot of turkey because of its high protein count and low fats. I always curry it though (in Balti or other non-yoghurt curry mixes).

Yes the whole fat=bad myth is completely false. The human body needs fat and there are plenty of good sources of it. One of the biggest mistakes people make when they diet is they cut out all fats entirely, which can actually raise LDL's (You know that bad cholesterol number lol). A good balance of unsaturated fat's especially from sources like nuts, avocados, olives, olive oil, and certain meats, are actually good for you.

I'm trying to get back into my whole healthy eating mode. BTW anybody know a good way to make fiber cereals taste less like cardboard? I've been using strawberries to mask their flavor, but I'm getting kind of tired of that.

Hey, I'm from Jersey, chemicals are a basic food group. Besides, the diet sodas quench my thirst more effectively than the regular.
