  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Church(with a capital C) HISTORY is very important

Just as one is a citizen of a country and it's history is important for that citizen...so it should go for every Christian and Church history!

It's a slow night, so I'll start a thread. :)

Amen! Two things all Christians should know. 1. Sacred scripture 2. Church history(ie ,,Fathers, Councils, heresies etc).

Well councils up until Trent! :p:D;)

Actually that brings up a good point....what was the last church council before ANY schism/split?

LOL...gotcha on the can of worms and Trent. ;)
Read the 19th Council of Trent in the link below...you'll see what I'm talking about. HAHA. :)

I just found this link with very brief synopsis of all of them:

MAJOR COUNCILS OF THE CHURCH: (councils.htm)

Yeah it's a Catholic site, so protestants must get over that small hurdle! ;)

If we get an EO in here I think they can confirm for me for sure whether they recognize any council past Chalcedon. I believe that is where they stop.

Anyway, I am also very fascinated with all Church History, not just what is encompassed in the Councils.
How various denoms formed and why, etc.
Also the period of Church history before the Eastern split.
When there was just ONE big Church.

I have a theory that if Trent was called earlier and if both parties listened to each other better then perhaps we would not have as many splits as we do today. But that's just my theory.

Both parties being?
(just for clarification)

I agree. I love the early Church centuries 1-8. But I also like to study the reformation era too, I am a bit rusty on the rest!

That's human logic, but God's ways are not our ways. Man does not rule and or direct the body of Christ. The reason why we have half the epistles in the NT is because of man trying to rule and direct the body of Christ when from early on it was supposed to be led by the Holy Spirit.

What the heck are you talking about? What you stated here as NO bearing on the subject matter of this thread sir.
I'm not stating that knowing Church history is a salvific issue so chillax, nor am I trying to downplay the importance of the role of the Holy Spirit in guiding the Church.

So what you are saying and your POV is that Church history is null and void?
Just askin.

I love reading Augustine and Aquinas although I admit I need to read more of them. Irenaeus is also cool to read. Studying the early Heresies is eye opening. When i took my first undergrad class in theology we studied like a ton of heresies. the reason why they did that is becasue they say if you become aquainted with the false stuff then the real stuff will be more apparent. Some of them i never heard of till the class showed me. It was wild.

I have been enjoying slowly reading the writings of the all of the AnteNicene Church Fathers.

The reason I have asked this question is that when I was a member of an SBC church, I had asked my pastor a question regarding the early Church Fathers and his response was that he only took 1 semester of Church history at SW Theological Seminary for his Masters Degree and didn't know and told me that I probably knew more about them than he did. He also told me that the majority of that congregation probably had no clue as to simple BAPTIST history.

I just slapped my head at that one and a month later I disavowed the SBC.

I'm stating, kind sir, that the gospel message is simple to understand, it's mens logic that attempts to complicate it. It's just as true now as it was 2,000years ago.

I feel that I can safely call you a minimalist. That's all well and good.
Again I ask you...from your POV is Church History null and void?

Agreed, yet has nothing to do with my thread. ;)

Why is it you attempt to label me anything other than a child of God? I have not done the same to you.

No Church history is not null and void, there is always a residue.
