  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

He doesn’t hesitate to confirm rumors that he tears the pages of Leviticus 18:22 out of copies of The Bible in his hotel rooms either. (The chapter deals with a number of sexual activities that are considered to be abominable, including homosexuality.)

“I do, absolutely. I'm not proudly defacing the book,” he says, “But it's a choice between removing that page and throwing away the whole Bible.”

I found this really revealing. Why would he tear out the pages? It seems he's rebelling against what he knows deep in his heart is true.

Personally I've never been a big fan of his, and this blatant blasphemy will likely impact whether I support him financially by watching his movies in the future.

You do realize you are opening yourself up to attacks by people who will say Christians have historically destroyed copies of other holy books because they knew deep in their heart the book was true, right?

i don't get it. Why doesn't he just "ignore" the Bible? He's getting older, can't live more than 10-15 more years most likely.....and then he faces the living God, with no defense. He's too old to be so foolish.

I literally just said to my husband "I'll probably get blasted for posting this", but it could make for a rather interesting discussion. Why would someone deface the Bible like he does if not for the fact that he's bothered deep within by the scripture.

Really means nothing to me,I really didn't know people actually read hotel bibles. If he was the one the translated the original bible,I would be more concerned.I can't believe how people focus so much on what it says about homosexuality and nothing else,At least it seem that way.

That's awfully presumptuous. It really fascinates me how often Christians think "this person really doesn't like our religion, therefore they must really believe it." More likely he does not like the effect the bible has had on people. Being a gay person, he has likely put up with a lot of people using the bible as a means of justifying their behavior towards him.

People have been doing similar things to books, artifacts, etc of religions, ideologies, political beliefs, etc. that they don't believe in since the beginning of recorded history. Christianity itself has a long history of destroying relics, holy books, etc of other religions.

Do people who burn american flags really believe in american policy? No. They just have a drastically different point of view on it than you or I do.

Is it silly? Yes. Is it childish? Yes. Does it mean anything? Not really. But to say that he must really believe in the bible is equally silly.

I wonder about something a bit different. He rips out a page in Leviticus, but he forgets a story in Genesis that now get generalized.

Forbidden fruit.

How many people do you know who sit down in their hotel room and turn to Leviticus and start reading it? Perhaps a very few start in Genesis, fewer still make it to Leviticus. Most that read the hotel bibles turn either to the NT or Pslams or Proverbs. Most of the rest turn to some favored OT passages. And I don't mean most in barely fitting sense of more than half, I mean 90% or more.

But rip those pages out and many if not most wnder what is missing and no small number will follow through and find out.

In short he has caused far more to read those 'missing' pages than would have otherwise.

It's not his book, so he shouldn't vandalize it. Simple enough.

If he's really offended by the presence of those passages in his hotelroom, he could just lay the book in the hallway or give it to some of the personel or something.

As for him removing the verses because he knows they are true: ehh.. no. I could imagine a jew not wanting to sleep next to a copy of Mein Kampf. In the same way, a gay person might not want to sleep next to a book stating that he is an abomination. The jew doesn't think Mein Kampf is true, and the gay person doesn't need to believe that those passages from the Bible are true.

(just incase this gets reported for comparing the bible to Mein Kampf: please read the above piece carefully. I'm not in fact insulting the Bible in any way)

I'm just glad he's not ripping out Ecclesiastes. If he did that I'd throw away all of my Lord of the Rings DVDs.

LOL it is a shame he is being so foolish....he was an excellent, gifted actor in that series. Me thinks thoughts of his eventual death is catchin' up with him.

This makes absolutely no sense.
Keep it simple.
Ever wanted to destroy or remove something you found vile and offensive?
I think he's showing a lot restraint not destroying the entire book.

Personally I've never been a big fan of his, and this blatant blasphemy will likely impact whether I support him financially by watching his movies in the future.
yah, he cares.

While I disagree with defacing a book you don't own, I can see the point he's making.
The vast majority of Christians, while they don't literally remove the pages, do generally ignore the rules in Leviticus.

I've heard the argument many times that the dietary laws don't apply and the moral ones do or similar mental gymnastics but I'm pretty sure theres nowhere in the Bible that specifies 'Rules 1-6 are still valid, rules 7-20, exclulding 13, no longer apply.'

nah, it be foolish, to sit in a hotel room, find the Bible in the drawer, and search for those partticular verses, and proceed to rip them out....and it hints at the fact he may have done this on a regular basis
