Can I split my tithe?

Hi guys

quick question, I currently tithe 10% of my income to my church, which is obviously what I'm supposed to do, however, I've recently started going to a second church as they run an Alpha course I'm currently attending and a lot of my friends go there.

Now, 10%, I can just about manage but it is a struggle, but I couldn't give 10% to both churches, as that would just about cripple me financially.

So my question is this, can I split my tithe between the two churches, and give both 5%? I can find no Biblical guidance and its starting to concern me.

So does splitting it seem the right way to go, or does it have to be 10% to each church?

The tithe is part of the old testament law, we have been released from the law, therefore you don't need to tithe to either church. You are free to give whatever you like to either or both churches as they have needs.

Hello Strix. First I'd like to commend you on paying your tithe. That indeed is a rarity in our christian society today.

My advise to you would be to pay your 10% to the church you are a member at, and if you feel strongly impressed to give to the other church than an offering by itself would suffice.

Don't be discouraged. God is faithful and is able to do more with 70% than we can with 100.

Timothew is correct. You are not obligated to thithe, that was for the Levitical preisthood, for a temple that no longer exists.Only give when and where God tells you.And he might even say dont give there,or to that place,or something like that.

Should he mail his check to Jerusalem?

Only tithe in the place God has chosen as the dwelling place for his name, that is Jerusalem (Deuteronomy12:11)

Tell me, how should the ministry be supported?

Don't forget that the tithe and offering belongs to the Lord, so if you don't have to tithe you don't have to give offering either.

You do know that Paul never took tithe right?
Giving,is not a compulsory tithe, that invokes judgment.(Malachi 3:9).So perhaps you can show me where Paul taught "tithe".He said not to give out of compulsion.(law).Or stress,by the churh putting burdens on the members.

2 Corinthians 9:7
Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

duty regarding to one's advantage, custom, argument
2) calamity, distress, straits

To respond to the OP; however you choose to split it up is your choice. God has given you everything you have, whatever you give back to His church is, basically, thanking Him for what you have. Churches need support to pay the bills and be there when you need them. (Marriage, funerals, crises and Sunday morning.)

10% is a guideline. Some people tithe more and some less depending on how much they can or can not afford.

How much you tithe and where is between you and God.

Why would Paul have to teach tithe when God had already instituted it? You know you seem to be real afraid of judgment, and to avoid it you simply accept that those things that you don't like to do, that would bring judgment, simply don't matter anymore thus nullifying any judgment that would result in a lack of obedience.

2 Corinthians 9:7

You are suppose to give willingly. Don't forget that along with the tithe is an offering. God says the tithe is holy and is for Him. The offering however is to come from the abundance of your heart.

Do children usually give money to their parents or do parents usually give to their children? To all who received Him, He gave the right to become children of God.

The children are exempt. They are allowed to give, and can give whatever they wish.

Save for the fact that giving is how we support the ministry, and that's how it is supposed to be. Everyman is to give according as he can, but the 10% is set while the offering is to come from the heart.

No. 10% is not set. That's the law. It does not apply.

Giving is how we support the ministry, also the poor, and that is entirely directed by active love. Love shown by doing, NOT Law. Give whatever you want to give. Might be 10%, it might be some other amount, the New Testament does not specify an amount to give.

To Strix,

I commend you on your faith and love, and that you are "stretching" to grow in Christian life.

This is adiaphoron and I believe the offering is to GOD, so it's not really a technical issue via what congregation (or ministry) by which that is done.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I agree with the quoted post above. As Christians, we are not only placed in communion with all Christians in the one holy church, but I think we are called into the local assembly, what we typically think of as a congregation. When we join that, we are a part of that family. We join with them, in that ministry. And I think our primary focus should be there - including in our offerings. I KNOW that in small churches, that's not only sound discipleship but frankly, it's often just plain needed.

Now, there is NOTHING wrong with embracing a Bible study through another church! And it's a good thing to show your love and faith for God in giving via that, too. But I'd see that as best to be above and beyond your own family.

BTW. I've been giving at least 10% since I was 13 years old. I now give close to twice that percentage. I don't make a lot of money, so my monitary gift is likely far less than yours, but to me, the point is faith and love, gratitude and dedication. It's no sacrifice, it's a blessing to me. If nothing else, it helps me keep my priorities straight.

But as I said, I don't think it would be WRONG to "split" your gifts between the churches. I just would stand with my own family FIRST. Other families would be above and beyond that. IMHO.

Blessings to you!

Pax

Please show me how we are bound by old cov tithing laws.
