  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was an atheist when I was young. As far as I can remember, I did not have a good reason to be an atheist. Now, this question is becoming more puzzling to me than ever. Why would people want to be an atheist?

One does not have to be a Christian. But to my experience, one "should" have a religious belief. So, if you are an atheist, I would like to hear (and seriously consider) your reasons. I am not trying to debate you, but trying to understand you by a few questions.

So, please give me your best reasons of being an atheist. You may start with the most convincing one. :)

Thanks.

My reason was my family didn't devote as highly as I do now. several factors attributed to my atheism such as, I felt at the time no one understood me, no one loved me, God took my best friend to early and he didn't deserve it. Once I was mad at God, I started to set out to disprove his existance, reading materials linked to atheistic belief, all kinds of things like that. Then I fully became Atheist and didn't care much for a God that society believed to be true to justify what they were doing was right.

People would use God as an excuse to do things, often what I saw were bad things...I turned away full throttle and didn't look back....

"There was no God...If there was he wouldn't let this happen....Besides, evolution discredits creation...the bible was wrong. There's actual scientific proof that God doesn't exist...AND without religion, the world would be a happier place..." <--these were the words I thrived on and I continued with my journey to disprove his existance...

*Man,....that was really painful to write...*

I became very depressed and suicidal after that...the overwhelming lonelyness was taking it's toll on me and because I didn't believe anyone was there...I was totally...alone....

Man, Look at how beautiful these pictures are by the amazing facts of evolution by random chance processes. Just amazing, truly is.

Okay, that's it. I'm done with you. Go ask someone else why referring to evolution when talking about mountains only showcases your willed ignorance. There is nothing more basic to evolution than this. Get a book. Get an education. Then we'll chat.

Hey WOAH chill out dude...

If you desire to make your point clear you mustn't get angry. Unless you want people to see just how irrational one can be....especially in an argument or debate where issues are hot...

I'm not angry. I think I've been doing an impressive job of not getting angry. However, I'm just wasting my time on this guy. He literally doesn't know the first thing about the theory, and yet he claims that he understands it, we have it wrong, and wants to argue how ridiculous the theory is. He obviously has no intent on understanding what's going on. He keeps using the same faulty logic (argument from incredulence), even when it has been pointed out time and time again that that is what he is doing. He doesn't read any of the resources we provide. He can't even bother to cite his own resources to back up his arguments.

What's the point? I'd be better of having a nice discussion with this brick wall over here.

Is it the glory and splendor of the Lord Jesus Christ that annoys you? Or is it our unwillingness to accept that something so beautiful, so gorgeous can happen by accident?

No.

No. It's when someone claims to understand evolution, spends pages and pages saying how we know nothing about science, and then goes on to claim that evolution is responsible for mountain formation!

That annoys me.

I'm having a tough time following you. I'm saying you won't be able to understand the things of Christ because the wisdom and incite we have is from Christ.

I knew nothing of true Love, and absolute Holiness, until the Lord showed me it through his word.

But if you're not in his word and not conversing with him, you won't obtain this wisdom.
But it is one way - you don't need this wisdom to become a child of God, for we are drawn to Christ because of his Love and Mercy!

Spot the contradiction.

I was meaning that you tried to "huminize" an all knowing and all powerful God.
I believe that Christ is ALL those things that you wrote.
But there is no way that we can understand what his Love means, or what his mercy has done for us! I can't comprehend his splendor!

*Sigh*
You managed to contradict yourself 3x in one paragraph.

Hello brick wall...

Is this the evolutionary theory(sorry this thread is a little long to go back and se the entire argument)?
IF that's the case my only rebuttal would be that it's just that. A theory. Science provides many many clues to our ancestry. However, those findings aren't enough to bring evolution out of being just a theory. Sure, it seems like it's the truth, but theres still many many broken links we've yet to find out.

Now that's just my opinion. Same would go for the big bang for me. But there are christians who love to believe that God was responsible for evolution (albeit responsible for anything that goes on in this world). I can't argue as I find myself thinking the same thing.

In Catholic theology, the one thing that's incompatable with christianity would be the evolution of man through dead matter as a result of a purely random process. Everything else goes, we are free to believe that God was responsible for evolution and that we came from chimps or the ape (tho it still makes me wonder how the ape is still with us today). We just have a hard time with something just forming out of random click.

I respect your views and often found evolution as fascinating. And I do happen to see articles on evolution to be fact....as well as still a theory (I don't get it...).

If that wasn't the case...then I'm sorry i'm off topic...lol

I'm not radical, and I don't strive to convert...so hopefully people won't think any less of me. These are only my opinions being expressed and if you don't agree then that's fine...I see no reason to turn someone away just because they didn't agree with me

A theory is something with the highest certainty in science.

You realize that the last two Popes have publically given their support for evolution right?

Keep in mind that evolution involves natural selection. Evolution is not "random" (such an abused word!) in the sense that every "random" result is preserved. Natural selection means that only some results are preserved -- those that have led to successful reproduction. Finding nature beautiful may be a biological trait that had evolved due to some reproductive advantage.

(BTW, I hope you realize that mountains and clouds have nothing to do with evolution. Evolution is a biological theory. While evidence for evolution might come from non-biological subjects, the process of evolution is solely biological.)

Theory in a scientific sense is quite different from theory in a layman's sense. That's all I will say.

To (re-)answer the OP's question. One good reason to be an atheist (or agnostic for that matter), which has been demonstrated quite well here, is that a search for truth is not hindered by faith in an almighty deity.

Hey JGG, Let me ask you one question. Who said I was talking to you when I made that post? I wasn't talking to anyone, I was just posting something of how stupid evolution is because those clouds and mountains are just products of chance. Just like we are.

Hello brick wall...

JGG, If you read my previous posts I have already argued against evolution, and the basis that evolution is based on. You say the "big bang" and the "soup" is not of evolution, Then what came up with the big bang? soup? If soup is apart of evolution by the "first-single celled" organism, It had to get there. How? The big bang, and If you disprove the big bang there was no earth that had chemicals that "RANDOMLY" bumped together. You say that mountains did not evolve. Well, If the earth came about the big bang, The whole earth is a product of chance because the probability of that happening is very unlikely. I mean, 'BANG' and just randomly out of all the galaxies it created a planet able to sustain life. Therefore the mountains are products of random processes. If the bang occured and the earth was and there was no mountains they had to evolve because they are here now. But I do not see how anyone can know this is true because this is based on the assumptions (beliefs) of words of a scientist who thinks this is how it started backed with beliefs by persuasion based on someone who wasn't there. We cannot know the past before the humans. We have evidence in the present from the past but this evidence does not appear and tell us the past automatically. A scientist interprets the evidence the way he perceives it to be, which cannot be trusted, but obviously like many people on this forum believe in evolution which is only the beliefs of other scientists, they say it or post it on a site, tv, mag., or book, and you believe it. Creationism is different than evolution, and You all look at creationism through evolutionary glasses therefore you cannot see the true sense of creation, just like "SuperPhil" has stated about CHRIST's Wisdom. You call think that nothing can be smarter than humans, well when you die you'll wish you believed that JESUS was the Creator. You also cannot account for a change in christian lives. Before I received GOD' salvation, I cussed, I didn't care about church or the bible, I hated it actually, and many more. I then accepted His Salvation. I stopped cussing through JESUS because I didn't just try to stop, I did stop. Now I love going to church and I love the Bible, How do you explain this change? You will probably say it is a figment of my imagination, well where is the evidence for that? You do not know this 100%. But see I have full 100% of that change happening. (2 Corinthians 5:17 here it is).

Isambard, I am including the video you posted already too. Now see this is the part where you guys do not see the reason for this happening. As a Christian, when you first posted this, I already knew where you were going with this, and i already know the answer before I even read your question.
Things like this happen because of "sin" ...Because of our sin, we deserved that tornado and to wake us up is why he sent that. GOD is a righteous judge. When a nation, like America puts its foundation upon makinds own thinking because they think they can run it the way they want, they're wrong. The result of the picture of the guy is from "sin" of some sort. You guys will say tons of things against this but it is truth. "Believe it or Not." Heaven or Hell, Your choice.

Ah got it;
When things turn out pretty its due to a "loving creator", but when things turn out nasty and ugly, its suddenly due to "sin".

Might want to take a stab at this then?
