  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So only the Pope can send instruction on topics to study?
I have studied these term as they relate to the triune man.
The Nature of man in his regenerated state and/or before the fall from Eden.
But if the terms are not spoken of plainly in Church or Catechism that is all I need to know.
The words are tranlated
Soma=swma

from swzw - sozo 4982; the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application, literally or figuratively:--bodily, body, slave.

psuche=yuch
  1. from yucw - psucho 5594; breath, i.e. (by implication) spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from pneuma - pneuma 4151, which is the rational and immortal soul; and on the other from zwh - zoe 2222, which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew fagw - phago 5315, 7307 and chay 2416):--heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, + you.
Pneuma=pneuma

from pnew - pneo 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind. Compare yuch - psuche 5590.

No those terms are not in the Catechism. There is plenty on the nature of man and the Fall, etc... but not using those monickers. You can search the Catechism here.

RevAngel,

I've studied this same issue and this is my present observation which is similar to yours. Man is a three 'part' being consisting of spirit/pneuma, soul/psuche and flesh/sarx. The word soma is used when talking about the "whole" or 'total being', which I see as the sum of its 3 parts...even as the definition you quoted states:

"sozo 4982; the body (as a sound whole),"

Unfortunately scripture doesn't always line up with my 'neat' little definition. How do you deal with the word 'sarx' and the triune man?

4561 sarx: flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e.(strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extens.) the body (as opposed to the soul [or spirit], or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by impl.) human nature (with its frailties [phys. or mor.] and passions), or (spec.) a human being (as such)

And if the Soma of an individual consisted of someone who was missing 'say an arm/leg' would they not be a 'sound whole' or 'soma'?
