Why did Jesus change Simon's name to Cephas?

Why did Jesus change Simon's name?

Probably the same reason my high school German teacher changed my name to Franz. There were two of us in the class with the same name and, to avoid confusion, she elected to call me Franz. It did not have any deeper meaning than that.

Why did Jesus give Peter alone the keys to the Kingdom?

Actually, he didn't. He gave them to all of the Apostles. If you actually believe what you said is true, then nobody else had the keys and Peter still carries them around in Heaven.

Why did Jesus tell Peter alone to strengthen his brethren and to feed his sheep?

Again, if you believe that this was an entirely unique command to Peter, then the other apostles would have quickly faded into obscurity and Peter's ministry would have ended on earth at his death.

Peter alone was given the keys to the Kingdom. I don't know why some protestants keep lying about this.

It is not a matter of what I think, it is a matter of biblical record.

I have a better idea for a thread title. "Why did Chestertonrules create yet ANOTHER thread on pretty much the same topic as he has umpteen times before?"

No one has come up with a good answer yet.

I enjoy annoying protestants with questions that can only be answered by a Catholic!;)

where:

good answer=any answer that I'd accept
and could only be answered by Catholics=because I refute anything that isn't particularly Catholic.

Not true.

Feel free to prove me wrong by providing a reasonable answer to my question.

Fine then.

Why did Jesus change Simon's name? Because he chose to. I can't read Jesus' mind, so that is the best answer any can give, everything else after that is extrapolation and assumption.

Why did Jesus give Peter alone the keys to the Kingdom? (He didn't.)

Why did Jesus tell Peter alone to strengthen his brethren and to feed his sheep? (because in that conversation, he was speaking to Peter only.)

those are answers at their most basic.

Well, at least you tried!

I like St. Augustine's answer better:

"Before His suffering the Lord Jesus Christ, as you know, chose His disciples, whom He called Apostles. Among these Apostles almost everywhere Peter alone merited to represent the whole Church. For the sake of his representing the whole Church, which he alone could do, he merited to hear, I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven (Matt 16:19)."

Well, there don't seem to be any other 'Peters' about, so no need to change his name on that account. Of course it could be entirely coincidental that Christ names Peter 'rock' and then says that on 'this rock' he will build his Church. Obviously He must have meant 'pebble' or 'little rock' despite the fact that in Aramaic Cephas means 'rock'.

Given the way in which the RCC is so often accused of ignoring the plain sense of the words it seems odd that here it is the non-RCs who do that. He calls Peter the rock and says on this rock He will build the Church - get over it the rest of us.

peace,

Anglian

Why did Jesus change Saul's name to Paul? (Answer in Acts.)

Why does Jesus still hold the keys in Revelation? (Answer in Revelation.)

Why did Jesus tell Paul to feed His sheep and to whom did he pass on the instruction? (Answer in Acts.)

To whom did Peter then feed and pass on the instruction? (The answer is in 1 Peter.)

So I assume your position is that Peter was head of the apostles, but that this position did not have successors.

Is this correct?

Why did Jesus change Saul's name to Paul? (Answer in Acts.)

Jesus didn't change Paul's name. Paul is just the Greek equivalent of Saul.

Why does Jesus still hold the keys in Revelation? (Answer in Revelation.)

The pope gives them back when Jesus returns? Just a guess.

Why did Jesus tell Paul to feed His sheep and to whom did he pass on the instruction? (Answer in Acts.)

Can you give me a scriptural reference?

To whom did Peter then feed and pass on the instruction? (The answer is in 1 Peter.)

Peter preached the first sermon to gentiles. Is this what you mean? Peter was given the revelation from God that gentiles were equal to Jews in Christ.

I gave you perfectly good answers, but you just didn't appreciate them. I think you are fishing for answers to fit your preconceived theology. If so, you will find them in abundance on the OBOB forum.

I am not annoyed, but on the other hand I have way too much time on my hands to be annoyed, which is why I bothered to respond to your questions.

So, after changing Simon's name to Franz, he then tells him that he will build his church upon this Franz. Hmmm...

What's in a name? A peter by any other name would still be a peter. So, Christ said he would build his church upon this rock. Well, I suppose Peter must still rock for you.

Don't really see how that changes anything.

((Actually, he didn't. He gave them to all of the Apostles. If you actually believe what you said is true, then nobody else had the keys and Peter still carries them around in Heaven.)))

Peter alone was given the keys to the Kingdom. I don't know why some protestants keep lying about this.

I didn't know that the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox were also protestants. What are they protesting? If you have not heard, they also believe that Christ gave the same keys to the other apostles. So, I suppose they are lying, as well.

However, you dodged my comment. There is nothing whatsoever to indicate that Peter had any ability or command to pass these keys along to a succession of Popes. Thus, if you believe that he alone received these keys, then he alone must still possess them because the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.

It is not a matter of what I think, it is a matter of biblical record.

I never said that you thought anything. I honestly do not care whether you think or not. I said that if you believe that Peter alone was the subject of this action, then he alone could not have shared it with anyone, either while he was living or after his death.

According to the bible, Jesus gave the keys to Peter alone.

The keys, like those in Isaiah 22, would be passed to a successor.

That's the point.

Your answers are wrong.

To the third question, `Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit made you overseers, to feed the assembly of God that He acquired through His own blood, (YNG, Acts 20:28).

Why did the Lord name James and John the sons of thunder?

I have no idea what your point is.

You still didn't answer the questions in the OP.

Why did Jesus change Simon's name?
I'd say that to begin to understand we'd first ask ourselves, "Under what sort of conditions did God change names throughout Scripture?

Why did Jesus give Peter alone the keys to the Kingdom?
I dont know that He did give them to Peter alone.
First I'd want to know what the keys were.
IMO he gave them to peter 'first'.

Why did Jesus tell Peter alone to strengthen his brethren and to feed his sheep?
Because they were weak and hungry. ... DUH!
;)
