So will the books be restored?

I know thats tedious work.

Likely. The project is partly about that finding stuff that may need fixing and such.

We have people. :) They'll fix it...the damage is just soooooo strange. Look up bookworm damage on a google image search. Strange stuff. Not so much gnawing as like a precise drill in various 360 degree angles.

I've been thinking along those line also David.

I've got some major flaws in certain areas although I guess they do not qualify as mortal sins.

We've got 2 priests. Never sure which one will be in the confessional.

And I have gone to reconciliation services where other priests were available...

I missed last Monday when there was a reconciliation service due to illness. I think when I feel relatively bug-free & I need to go & possibly discuss this issue in the confessional???

I am sorry for those struggles

It'd be more helpful if the priest actually instructed you how to make a good confession instead of just chastising you for making what he felt to be a poor confession.

Just remember that so, so very much of what we do is so dependent upon our intention. God is perfect Father who is also all knowing. HE knows how much we want and are trying to do the right thing...even if according to the letter of the law we're not. The heart with which we do things--especially with the motivation of trying to do things out of faith and for the love of God and neighbor...is so, so paramount.
thank you Shannon....I agree that intention is key and maybe that's why he said I was being scrupulous (I tend to be very hard on myself). Anyway it doesn't matter because my small town only has one priest to choose from......

Believe me, I know. I've dealt with old books myself. I've seen some where it looked almost beautiful but it was a shame the books were in such a condition.

Amen to that!

I've gotten books from the early 1800's. Bugs are long gone but you still have that feeling.

That is so freakin hard....our town has 4 available priests (2 at the Catholic Center at the Uni, which for all intents and purposes functions as a parish-why I don't know...but alas...and 2 at the parish)---and there isn't a good confessor among the bunch. If I *have* to I'll go here locally--but if not I'll wait until I drive the 90 minutes each way to see my spiritual director and confess. I know that the grace is the same--but the edifying nature of the sonfession is vastly different.

It can be hard. If it helps, one of my teachers once told me something. She was a nun.

One day I had to take a make up test and came in during recess and she was praying. I said I was sorry for interrupting her prayer. She told me life was a prayer and that it can not be interrupted. That we should live all our moments as if they were part of a single prayer to God that is our life. And if we did...it would make it easier to see what is and is not a sin because it interrupts the prayer. And if we are honest with ourselves we can tell that.

Now this can sound like it would drive someone to greater scrupulousness. But honestly, I have found it can give you perspective and a degree of peace. It helps to see that it balances out and you can tell mortal and venial better because if you look at your life as a prayer...you see if it is headed, on the whole, toward or away from God.

It takes some learning and needs to be teamed with a good prayer life. But it is worth a try.

I'll try that David...thank you. It seems my life has been more of a nightmare lately (towards God) than a prayer and that's the problem. I don't like myself anymore and what I've become since I've turned away....anyway, thank you for your help.... :)

I see some people going to confession weekly. Barring mortal sins... I wonder how to make a good confession.

I'm still not really familar with the practice being a convert. I look over the list carefully & highlight what I feel I have committed & need help with.

But other than that, I really don't know what to say or do.

Seeing these people that go weekly I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

I know we aren't to be repeating ourselves constantly if we have been forgiven unless we committed the same sin again.

I know it's not good to be scrupulous.

I dunno, maybe it's just me. But I see these people that I know are very holy & I doubt they are committing mortal sin every week.

So I guess my question is how to you make a good & fruitful confession when mortal sins have not been committed?

A priest once told me that most people who come to confession are more looking for spiritual direction than to actually confess but do not really make the distinction.

Maybe that accounts for some of it.

Otherwise, there is something we could confess every day if we really thought about it hard enough and we should look in the mirror as often as we can.

For example; I got angry yesterday and was rude to someone when I shouldn't have been but am passionate and get indignant in the face of immorality which sometimes gets the better of me. Then there are always our less than Holy thoughts. We need to practice forgiveness.

If you get a good exam of conscience guide and think in terms of venial sins then you could confess every one of them you recognize if you wanted though you don't have to if they are only venial. Being aware of them is very good for us though. It gives us direction and helps/protects us from degenerating further.

I prefer to go every 4-6 weeks and or only more often if a mortal sin occurs.

Some people would say this is too much, others not enough. Its the balance I find for me but thats not to mean that I am ignoring my venial sins in between confessions either. I have learned the hard way, if I do that, then they will snowball out of control and I will fall into an even darker place than I am now. Sin is deceptively blinding and small sins easily leads to greater ones.

I recall Deacon Bill Steltmyer said Mother Angelica once told him to go confession weekly because he was getting increasingly grumpy over the pressures he was under. She is a saint imo. ;) Anger is an element of murder.

Whether it be anger, pride, neglect, sloth or any of the other 7 capital sins (see very bottom) or what have you;

We are all struggling with some form of our concupiscience that some of us could probably confess nearly every day or several times a day when it comes right down to it.

Know what I mean?

I'm two hours from Blue Ridge.....Roswell is about two and a half....we should meet up sometime, Highlands is beautiful I think you'd love it!

I would love that! Will you PM or email me (or post on my blog) in a few weeks? All of the kids' acitvities end by the beginning of May--and I ought to be well over my queasies by then. I will totally forget, because I am a ditz...but I really want to come up there!! So if you think of it--we'll try to plan it for one day in May!

If you are sincere (which I'm sure you are) and truly examine your conscience to the best of your ability and then make a confession, then you have made a good confession.

A bad confession is when someone tries to obfusacte, or when someone thinks things are not sins that actually really are sins and so they don't confess them. (As an example, I took a cab recently, and the girl driver actually told me she was a lesbian, "married" to another girl, and they go to Mass every Sunday. Can you believe it? Their confessions are void, assuming that they even go.)

But reading your posts, I don't see that kind of lack of understanding in you;: I'm sure you are doing just fine. I wouldn't fret over it too much. However, personally, I do recommend weekly confession, even though some priests do not.

I know what you mean Vern. :p

But I do think some of the weekly confessors are getting spiritual direction as I said earlier.

I thought venial sins were erased upon receiving communion.

Which is a good thing. Cuz I'm the queen of venial sins at times. I'd have to set up a tent in the confessional. ;)

Thanks. I think I have a pretty good grasp on confession/reconciliation. My problem is second guessing myself.
