  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've not either. Or read any of the books. Never jumped on that bandwagon.

Not to offend anyone in here who lives and breathes Harry Potter but. . .

It always struck me as sort of . . . childish.

Honestly I don't even know if Harry Potter dies at the end of the last book. Or who dies. I know someone was suppose to die.

It did me too. Until... well... not to offend anyone in here but.... Until I realized that criticizing a book I had never read was sort of....childish.

Seriously. You can't talk about what you don't know. And that is why I "jumped on the bandwagon" and read them. After the first few chapters, though, it was purely for enjoyment.

The HP series will go down in the canons of "classics". 200+ years from now people will be studying them in college literature courses along with Tolkien, Lewis and Shakespeare. Rowling is a literary genius. (Sidenote... There must be something in the water in England, all the best authors are English).

The movies are a disgrace, though.

Well, actually, several "people" die. And not just at the end.

Heh, good one, Tams!

I agree - probably 90% of my favorite books and authors are English.

I thought the first movie was excellent and did a great job. I thought the second movie was good. I thought the third movie started going downhill (of course, I thought the books started going downhill too). The fact that they lost Richard Harris as Dumbledore and hired a new director who completely jacked up the costumes and sets...really killed it for me.

It doesn't help to know that Daniel Radcliffe was cavorting around the London stage naked, surrounded by guys in horse costumes, at the same time he was portraying a children's literary character.

I wouldn't say it is a classic on the level of the others you mentioned. But it is definitely a fun read and I highly recommend it.

And it is way better then twilight, which is what everyone seems into now.

Don't tell me you've read Twilight!

We will have to have a special referendum on revoking your man card for that ^_^

I agree with many people here. J K Rowling, along with her writing style has done a great work in creating a whole school of magic with seven years and for each year there are some subjects such as transfiguration, charms, herbology etc. She has described these subjects also. The way she has named the subjects and several characters/places shows that she is really witty. Apart from this, many complex events have been inter-related in an interesting and flawless manner, that's commendable.

As Tamara pointed out; unless you've read a book, don't knock it. People's impressions and opinions vary widely.

"Merchandise whoring"...indeed.

I also agree that Harry Potter, while a phenomenon, won't be remembered in 100 years. At least, not as a classic. That's just my opinion. I think it had the POTENTIAL to be that great, but Rowling fell victim to marketing and greed, and was pumping out books because her public demanded them, not because they were truly inspired within her soul, as the first book was.

I read a lot of books.

It was sort of exciting/etc, and easy to read. The problem is somethings were just so bad that they were hard to ignore. Vampires don't go out in the sun because they are too shiny? Please!

Even Anne Rices Vampires were a bit too sexy/perfect/cool for me. Give me Dracula any day.

I have to admit you guys are making me want to read Harry Potter now.

If you like awesome children's lit, like "The Hobbit", "James & The Giant Peach", etc...definitely read at least the first book, DB. You'll love it. Rowling is a literary genius, and that first book is just overwhelmingly fun.

I've read both the Hobbit and James and the Giant Peach.

Omgosh, here we go again. They aren't SHINY, their skin is literally transformed when they become vampires (which makes complete SENSE since they aren't HUMAN anymore) into something like sparkling marble or rock. They avoid the sun to avoid exposing their identity, duh.

Dracula was actually the original sexy/cool vamp. Bram Stoker's is full of sensuality and power.
