  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's really telling is that Springer started out being a lot like Phil Donahue. He had good stories, real things. But his ratings were bad, so they told him to either spice it up or be done.

And well all know what that led to.

As for the freak shows, the worst about them is they tend to normalize such behavior. TV has done enormous damage in normalizing pre-marital sex, adultery, homosexuality and materialism to the point that few outside the church can separate themselves from the idea of reality TV and genuine, basic morality. It's just so sad and easy to see from this side of having bought into it. :sorry:
A BIG amen to that! The worst part is that even some of us watch these shows bringing them higher ratings and more sponsors. The only way to make any of these shows have any value at all (shock talk shows, police & crime shows, etc) is to turn them into 'teachable moments': discussions with our children pointing out what a mess people's lives become when they stray from the loving guidance that God gives us. Sin causes such grief and complication! And then we need to change the channel or turn it off. The phrase "garbage in, garbage out" comes to mind.

maybe it's the same type of adults who watch those shows as those who are on those shows if they enjoy it so much

I wonder...if people watch these shows just to feel a lil better about their own lives?
gosh... if so, then they must be pretty bad!! :|

I have no doubt that people probly feel a ton of guilt in the sins
they're chronically committing day after day, week after week,
year after year.
You're right, they probly need to feel better about themselves
from the weight of a guilty conscience & remorse over bad
decisions.?
very possible

Possible, but not likely Nadine. Not unless they were raised in the faith and fell away from it. I can tell you that I lived a completely sinful and unrepentant lifestyle and never felt guilty or remorseful about it until AFTER I was saved last year.

What you have to remember is that no matter how sinful someone's lifestyle is, they are still worthy of grace. :)

I dunno...it's kinda weird. Example...when I was a mess...my friends fell all over themselves trying to "help" me...

When I took a trip back "home" recently...I mentioned to the one friend I had left from the "old" days...that I thought it was sad that when my life was a mess...the others in our little circle were my BFFs...but when I came to Christ and He cleaned up my life...they ostracized me...(long and painful story)

My friend...sadly...revealed to me...they always ripped me apart behind my back...and the reason she was no longer friends with them either was because she stood up for me and called them on their hypocracy...

Anywhooo...the moral of the story is...my sad and tortured life made them feel better about their lives...and when my life improved...it made them feel bad about their lives...

I guess it's that whole...casting the light of Christ Jesus and exposing the darkness thingy.

People love the darkness...and if they can find someone even darker than they are...they embrace it even more.

Ok... I made the mistake of being lazy when tivo flipped back to regular tv & the Maury Povich show was on.
This episode is just depressing!
These people sleep around on spouses & have one night stands & have 20 kids by different people & don't know who the fathers are...

(& we aren't talking about Dr's & attorneys or anything either) :|

I almost wish this country put a quota on how many children a woman could have if they're on welfare or something! How do you stop this?
You probly can't - but how many kids are born into horrible households while they keep sleeping around?

I'd imagine that could harm a country after a few decades of mass reproduction?
:sigh:

It is my understanding that many on these shows are actors. And the ones who aren't are paid to "play it up" as much as possible to keep it as "entertaining" as possible.

Having said that, yes these things do happen in reality. I've got cousins who live like that, moving from man to man, leaving behind a trail of neglected children for the authorities to deal with. Horrible, sad stuff.

However, I'm actually not fond of the whole "quota on kids" thing because it is a major infringement on human rights. Next thing you know, people with hereditary illness and disability are not allowed to conceive, etc. etc. Nope, I don't think that's something government can effectively control without doing more damage than good. What I do think we need to do is pray for those kids. They are still precious in His sight. And He does, in His perfect will, sometimes raise even the most downtrodden of those up to become great men and women of God. We also need to look at how we can help. Things like volunteering at women's shelters, etc. helping to educate people at a young age so they don't follow that same path their parents did.

I often think of the former renters (a group of people, some of them drug dealers) of the house we bought recently. They lived like animals. No... worse than animals. I cannot fathom living like that day after day, in the filth and ugliness and anarchy, even letting their kids get stoned, and living in filth, bug infestation, and rat droppings (and even the rats themselves at one time!). I have to pray for patience and grace as I so often want to become angry with them whenever I come across more evidence of that ugliness in this house. And after five months of cleaning and renos we still have many months of cleanup to do, it's just that bad. But mostly I pity them because I know they're living that same lifestyle now, just in someone else's rental slum. And that's all those kids know. Sweet kids too. Who will teach them that life is not supposed to be like that? Not Jerry Springer, that's for sure.

BINGO. I've encountered people who love those sorts of shows. and that is exactly why. It's almost a comfort to them.

wow, that had to be painful Cris. I'm so thrilled that God has renewed your life.
If only people would submit to Him to live an abundant life.

It's very easy to run people down behind their backs - I used to do that when I didn't feel good about myself too. All that insecurity.

But after coming to the Lord, He changed that in me thank God. It's a really nasty habit & very destructive.

Great post, food for thought

feel like I stepped into a ladies room by accident ;)

Yea, me too. But these shows are hardly representative. I don't think there is anyone I know who would be of interest to Maury or Jerry. That's more important to me.

easy - you stop paying More money to the moms for each new child.... you help with child one and child two, but stop at 2 or 3 .... quite often these moms are having more children because their lack of self control actually makes them money in the form of your and my tax dollars.... and the money, in situations like that, does not get spent on or for the child anyway :(
