Biblical Names for Children.

How important do you think it is for Christian parents to give their children Biblical or otherwise 'Christian' names?

We chose to give our kids Biblical names for their first names, but we never felt any urgency or that it was necessary. I find Biblical names classic and timeless, so that was a big part of the appeal for me - I would hate to have given a child a name that would someday be dated or old fashioned.

i like the "classic" names as well. I think my boys names are classic (Nicholas, Stephen, Jacob). As it turns out, they are also in the bible. But we did not choose them because of that.

I didn't feel any kind of preasure to do it. In Fact, if truth be known, I wasn't truly saved until after I had children. I just love the way Biblical names sound particularly the Old testament names ending in iah. Names like Isaiah, Josiah and Michaiah. Mine are Moriah and Jeremiah.

very nice. I like those names too. they just "flow" with our last name. Did anyone consider how the first name would flow with the middle/last names?

For us personally, not very. I think the only Biblical name I have on my "to consider list" is Dinah and that's only as a middle name.

DH and I want to be sure our children all have 'Christian' names, but don't feel like it should be some sort of unwritten rule. There are a lot of secular names that I like a lot. (I love the names Dorothy, Pearl, and Henry. Especially Henry!)

It does puzzle me when people name their children after things like Egyptian or Greek gods. We just feel that giving our children the names we do will help them feel, in some way, more connected to the faith. I love calling my children's names and knowing that at the same time I am praising God. My first name is actually the name of an Irish goddess and although I like it, I find myself preferring more and more to go by my Hebrew middle name.

I know I don't belong here but I love talking names. I believe a name is so important because in some ways it defines a person.

I don't think biblical names are important. A lot of them are classics though (obviously) and I think classic names are always the best.

you know i want a biblical name for this baby but i dono why... it doesnt have to be. a names not gonna brin u up with God.

my sons name is James its common its biblcal and its always in the top 100. i names him after my grandad. only way i finally settled on a name.

altho gladly my other grandad would be annoyed if we named a child after him his name is Cyril. which to me its an old man name. (maybe cause my grandad is a old man) and he dont like it either.

When we talk names, it's either. The only 'biblical' name that my fiance (husband in three days' time!!!) won't entertain is Isabel (Jezebel). Makes me smile. I never even connected the two...

We did use biblical names, because 1. we loved them 2. We loved the meaning 3. They also had special personal meaning to us in our Christian walk 4. We wanted to honour God in a very outward way because we prayed long and hard for our children...
We have a Ruth and an Ezekiel.

I was quite surprised how uncommon it is to use biblical names in Christian communities, not that I think it's greatly important, just surprised!

To answer your question, it is totally not necessary. Frequently, the Bible points out that God seems to cherish our ethnicities, so naming along those lines is perfectly fine.

OTOH, there is no prohibition of using Biblical names for those of us who have adopted the God of the Jews.

Our girls' names (to me) are like songs of praise:

And our boys' names are drawn from our favorite Biblical heroes and other masculine ideas (with the least common names often first):
BenJudah Gabriel,
Aaron Josiah,
Jordan Uriah,
Jeshua David,
Elijah Daniel,
Hezekiah Nathaniel &
Zephaniah Joseph

I don't think it's at all important as a rule to follow, but I'd like to give my children (should we ever be blessed with any) at least one Biblical name each.

Our children do not have biblical names. Bible characters are everyday people. There is nothing so special about them that I should name my child after them. There are many bible names that I like, but nearing the end of the pregnancy I just knew what would suit the baby.

I have 2 daughters...Emily and Eden. I picked their names because they suited them...I, too, felt it when I was pregnant.

Totally out of curiosity, is there a reason for your naming scheme?

Our plan is to name our first son Robert [probably something biblical] because that's the naming tradition in his family. But any other children we have would probably have Biblical first names.

We just kind of went with our gut. Shiloh was supposed to be girl #4, but we got the impression that girl #3, Anastasia Nike, was the miscarriage we had two years prior.

There were other names that we both liked, but these ones felt "right."

Notably, JoHannah Jubilee is a Biblicized version of DW's first & middle names and Aaron is a Biblicized version of my middle name.
