  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are you a fundie?

You and a lot others.

Many words get "redefined" by the world to mean something they're not. The typical idea of a fundy includes total alcohol abstention, no dancing, a know-nothing attitude and a hatred for all but the strictest adherance to an idiosyncratic code.

While indeed some fundies are like that, more are not.

JR

oh and don't forget the stereotype that sex is ebil & strictly off limits even to married couples unless they're trying to have another child.

Well, by those silly stereotypes, I am definitely not a fundie. But none of that is in the FSGs and I never thought any of regulars here believed any of it. ^_^

lol, by those silly stereotypes I'm definately not a 'fundie' either!

Unfortunately the perception of us fundies as some stereotyped caricature is all pervasive and simply not true. I know it sounds crazy, but most of us are pretty normal people who love an extraordinary God.

Statement of Faith:

We adopt the Definition by the World Congress of Fundamentalists in 1976, to wit:

A born-again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ who

  1. Maintains an immovable allegiance to the inerrant, infallible, and verbally Inspired Bible;

  2. Believes whatever the Bible says is so;

  3. Judges all things by the Bible, and is judged only by the Bible, aka - "Sola Scriptura";

  4. Affirms the foundational truths of the historic Christian Faith:
    • The doctrine of the Trinity
    • The incarnation, virgin birth, substitutionary atonement, bodily resurrection, ascension into Heaven, and Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ
    • The new birth through regeneration of the Holy Spirit
    • The resurrection of saints to life eternal
    • The resurrection of the ungodly to final judgment and eternal death
    • The fellowship of the saints, who are the body of Christ;

  5. Practices fidelity to that faith, and endeavors to preach it to every creature;

  6. Exposes and separates from all ecclesiastical denial of that Faith, compromise with error, and apostasy from the Truth; and

  7. Earnestly contends for the Faith once delivered.
Therefore, Fundamentalism is a militant orthodoxy with a soulwinning zeal. While Fundamentalists may differ on certain interpretations of Scripture, we join in unity of heart and common purpose for the defense of the Faith and the preaching of the Gospel, without compromise or division.

Thus a Fundamentalist can be from quite a few Protestant denominations, even nondenominational. Those that defer to a view that sacred tradition is equal to scripture (not sola scriptura) would not.

By this I would say that I am a fundamentalist, however by some of the other stereotypes in this thread, I would not be a fundy under those. Fortunately they are only stereotypes.

Yes and this is our 'punishment' for taking God serious (too serious for their taste).

;) :cool:

I do believe the whole Bible is infallible and I have reasonable standards that I go by, therefore I feel I am a fundamentalist. However, a few of the hardcore fundies may disagree, as I am politically moderate (as many can see by my "Indy" symbol), wear pants most of the time, own a television, listen to a variety of music, and I read both KJV and NKJV.

lol, yes, believe anything you want, just not too strongly. If it starts changing your life then... :eek: Thankfully God has changed my life! :holy: ;):prayer:

Even though us fundies get accused of legalism all the time, I really don't find much of it around here... standards, yes. Uncompromising from God's word, yes. But legalistic? hmmm, I don't think I am...

I think everyone is legalistic about some things, and we fundies sure don't corner the market on that.

We have had members here in the past who believe sex is only for procreation, women should only wear skirts, only the KJV is the word of God, rock music is evil, etc. etc. It sure made for some lively conversations. But I haven't seen most of them around for a long time. I suspect it primarily had to do with the 7/7/7 disaster. I'm quite sure none of them would consider me a fundamentalist because my husband and I have decided we don't want kids, I like a number of English versions, primarily the NASB, I don't currently own a single skirt, I don't cover my head in church, and I'm sure a few other things that don't live up to their requirements. Instead of being offended (which I admit I have been at times in the past), I've decided it's better for me to examine any possible Biblical merrit of the stands they take on each thing and make sure I am not sinning by following my own will.

Well you know the old addage, it's fine to act like a monkey on crack at a sports venue -- but just don't get enthused about God in church!!

lol Nadiine!

Desmalia, I must have missed most of that - I have a knack for missing the 'action' around here! So I can't speak for what views were given.

But I think that someone having their own conviction is different from saying that every Christian must have the same conviction immediately or else... This is what I meant in that most of the fundies around here I have seen seem to be more understanding of this... maybe I'm just looking through rosey glasses!

:D

I think she meant, "But a nice one, as opposed to the narrow-minded legalistic fundy stereotype."

Of course, it's always possible she meant, "But a nice one, not mean like Nadine."

Yep (the former, not the fine print)! :clap:

Gee, I thought we were all nice Izzy.
Well, I wouldn't say all. There are some I have on ignore, but I like most of the regulars here, and to name just a few special favorites:

you
Nadiine
Desmalia
NorrinRadd
AnneSally (who's been gone for a while - I miss her :sad:)

Also, I'm becoming fond of Cubanito, and I get a lot of good information from Deacon Dean, who's not at all warm and fuzzy but he knows a lot.

Anyone else I didn't mention, well, put it down to my not having had my coffee yet. Unless I've got you on ignore, and even that doesn't mean I hate you, it just means I don't think it'd be productive for me to interact with you.

It was long, long ago and far, far away. More recently I did [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]o-Ryu. Now I've moved on to JKD. But 7th Dan, that's impressive! :thumbsup:
