  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Voice that concern to her--most doulas would be just fine with that--and willing to to then run errands or whatever sort of behind the scenes. I have to tell you- that as a mom with three daughters--and thinking about them giving birth someday- I feel totally okay not being there if that's what they want--I deeply understand the need to hhave certain energies outta the room. I would just share that concern very explicitly with the doula and see what her response is--my guess is that it will be a favorable one. Her whole goal is (or ought to be) for you to have the birth that you want.

I didn't even think about that. Can you be my doula? :)

What about what to expect as far as charging?

I didn't have a doula with my last birth, and if I had it to do over, I most definitely would have.

With my two previous births, I didn't know doulas existed, and was content in having the typical medical model of care labor and birth. This last time I really wanted to not get an epidural, but circumstances during my labor made it too difficult for me. I believe if I would have had a doula, I would have been able to birth without one.

DH and I are seriously considering hiring a doula for our hospital birth. My SIL's friend is a doula and I am going to be getting in touch with her.

 It's money well spent. Plus, if you think about it, if you have to pay a percentage of your hospital bill and your doula helps you avoid an epi (and possibly a c-section), you save money and she actually pays for herself. :)

Well, I asked the lady how much she charges & her response is she will not tell a price. So now I really don't know what to do. She said to pray about it & whatever we come up with is what she will take if we decide to use her. I'm not good with these type of situations because I wouldn't wanna give her too little.

I've heard the typical price is between $300-$500. So maybe somewhere in between?

Yeah, that's what I've heard. A lot of doulas look at their work as a calling or mission and so don't want their costs to keep women from having a doula if they want one. My doula wouldn't take money from me even though I tried to give it to her.

I've heard that amount too but wanted to be sure. This lady said that this is her calling as well & that she has seen many women for free. I would have to give her something for sure. She even told everyone in class that she would help with breastfeeding or first baths if anyone needed the help. Truly a caring person & God send.
