  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I overslept and missed liturgy this morning... :(

I hate it when it happens. The beginning of the week is so full of nothing after a Sunday without church. :sigh:

I have a very bad lung cold and don't want to get my entire church sick, thus I am staying home this morning.

That's beautiful Nestoj. It's so obvious that it comes from "down there" ;). I didn't know you guys also use bag-pipes.

I've always thought the greeks & the irish (and the spanish to a certain extent) are the only european nations that still produce original music based on their traditional motives. I'll now add serbs to the list. Also, I have to visit Serbia some day. The closest I've ever been was the serbian church in Dubrovnik. Belgrade girls have a great reputation ;) and hey I'm a single man :D.

I think Al Gore is a little wet behind the ears ... it feels like the onset of an ice age, not the beginning of summer here in the Northern latitudes.

According to the Weather Channel, the cold temperatures in the west have been on account of some kind of trough that made the whole region west of Texas freezing cold. It was warmer in Dallas than Phoenix. :p

I'm about ready to leave the house and it's already 70 degrees. :doh:We used to have actual seasons here. Now we have three months of 50's and nine months of being boiled in oil in the hottest part of hades. We used to have freezing temperatures regularly and now we're lucky to get five days per winter where it gets that cold.

Bagpipes, caval, bouzooki, frula, gusle.... and if we have any kind of music worth mentioning it's traditional (lots of it, trust me).

You're welcome whenever you come, only, I live in Nis and I claim with all responsibility that our girls are prettier.

God helps

Winter here, and cold. I've been wearing three layers minimum all day.

Saw Troy today. That was fun. I can think of a few things I'd rather have done than sit with him at a dinner table with a bunch of people I didn't know for a few hours tonight, but oh well. After two hours or so of him avoiding me, we got to talk and we're sort of being human now. Sort of. Hard to have an appetite when you feel ill, but the yiayia next to me made sure I ate! What I didn't eat got taken home for her cat. I suppose one shouldn't waste food...

Trying to take things a day at a time and trust God. Not always good at it. Trying.

I guess I don't have the same problem as you do, because while I have had a nasty cold since Tuesday, I have not stopped eating. Better yet, the day when I came home from hand surgery my fiancee made me lunch and I was falling asleep in between each bite. I was really hungry, being it was 2 in the afternoon or so and I had not eaten since 11 pm, but the anesthesia had not worn off completely and thus in between every bite I would doze off.

My family will forever tell the story about how when I was 2 or so we'd come home late from something and I was falling asleep, but my mum was sure I had to eat something...

So she heated up tinned spaghetti (like spaghetti-o's) and put it in front of me. I smiled, yawned, shut my eyes and tipped face forward...a hair from the boiling spaghetti, my dad caught me. And put me to bed. They ate the spaghetti!

Mum didn't try that one again.

I am glad you didn't get hurt, but that is kind of funny!

Hey, I know you don't do Finnish but figured I'd let you know... this Priest is the parish priest of Ilomantsi. He is Greek, came on Erasmus exchange to the seminary and then found a girl and came back...

If you'd want to, and give me a few days, I can translate it for you.

Cheers :).

I've seen this man's name on the finnish church website, but didn't know his story. I say don't translate yet, leave it as an exercise for me :). I recognise enough words to navigate around websites & find things such as addresses, shop opening times, contact details, times and types of church services, general topics of some newspaper articles etc. With Orthodox things it's easier, because so much of the terminology comes from greek anyway. Also, the kirkkoherra here speaks good english & understands even better. E.g. he was happy to hear my confession in english when I needed it. I have no complains :).

Would be good to learn properly some day (mama EU comission recommends every EU citizen be fluent in at least 3 european languages & I'm stuck at 2 :)). But not too much motivation - everything at work happens in english & while shopping, or in restaurants & bars I get by in english anyway. I have colleagues who have spent even 8-9 years up here and still don't speak. I'm sure you do understand the finnish language is a completely different animal from anything non-finns have seen before :).

Belive me I know... the Finnish language is a beast. I'm one of those weird Swedish speaking Finns... I didn't learn to speak Finnish well (I still don't write it nearly well enough) until after High School. I never heard it growing up (we lived in France until I started school) and I never had any Finnish speaking friends (something that nowadays is rather rare) so I had a very hard time in school...
The absolute majority of Finns appreciate if you just try to speak. They know it's a messed up language and hard to learn. My Greek only go so far as 'Dogs up a tree' (Doxa Patrie sp?) :D

Good morning to weird swedish speaking finns who admit it, to those who want to obey mama EU and learn Finnish, to those who have seen Prince Caspian and found it was brilliant, to those who got close to have a spaghetti accident, to those who missed DL for cause of cold or oversleeping, to those who question the global warming and to other friends.
