  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You already subscribe to LTism in the fact that you don't believe the age of the universe as put forth by people who actually study the subject.

This is off the subject, Jamie, but how old do I say this universe is? (Please answer this.)

Um --- no --- you have the burden of showing how this universe came into existence five days ago, without contradicting the fact that Adam was around for 930 years.

Adam was created as having been around for 930 years at Last Thursday. No contradiction.

You know, all of your threads really come down to you asking us to assume you are right and then asking us how you can be wrong if we assume you right.

It's completely meaningless as we don't accept your assumption that the bible is literally correct.

Then assume I'm wrong, [serious], and see if the answer is any different.

I thought you understood that last thursdayism meant a point in time BEFORE this very instant but AFTER the time when the universe appears to have been created? Why are we back here?

Wait, we can now assume you are wrong? Great, I'll have this solved in a second!

In response to the challenge:

Explain Last Thursdayism without violating the literal interpretation of Genesis 5:5.

[bible]Genesis 5:5[/bible]

The answer is simple.

When the world was made last Thursday, it was made to contain a book that had an embedded age of several thousand years (depending what part of it you are talking about), and this book made the claim that a person named Adam had lived for 930 years. And, when the world was made last thursday, there was made the remains of a man named Adam who had lived for 930 years. Any ages needed were embedded.

An alternative answer is that your position that genesis 5:5 is a true factual account is wrong. it is, at best, a metaphorical account.

problem solved.

Because I'm using the original (?) definition of Last Thursdayism. The old, outdated one from many (?) goalposts ago.

As we have shown, by the quotes YOU POSTED... the goalposts have not been moved - you have misplaced them!

Oh, you mean the definition that you misunderstood and are now attempting to blame others for to minimize your error.

I'm assuming from your many statements on physical evidence that you take a literal interpretation of the bible and thus believe it to be less than 10,000 years old.
I apologize if this isn't correct.

I have the burden of showing absolutely nothing.

5 days ago?? I do not see why that should be the case. Especially if Gen 5:5 talks about 930 years.

Last Thursday. That is all what is needed. The 930+ years only clash with last Thursday if you assume uniformitarianism, and that, as far as I gather from your spirit filled literalist brethren, is a big no-no when it comes to a literalist interpretation of the bible.

The goalposts never moved, YOU misunderstood what LTism is intended to demonstrate. If you had actually used it's proper name, the Omphalos theory/hypothesis, you wouldn't have made that mistake. We forgive you.

So I read this thread and I also have been reading the uncommon descent threads for the last two weeks. And there is a common theme. Creationist is wrong. People point this out to creationist. Creationist cannot in any way admit or even accept that he is wrong. Anyone else notice this too?

It was the 2nd definition --- the current one that I didn't know existed --- that I misunderstood --- not the one in my OP.

Is this another example of you not understanding a facet of reality, coming up with your own erroneous definition, and then blaming science?

The one in your OP does not differ from the "current" one. You simply did not read far enough. This is YOUR mistake, so do the honest thing and ACCEPT IT!

See, that's what normal, intelligent humans do when they get something wrong: they say "oh, sorry, I got that wrong". They don't blame everyone else for their own lack of understanding. Try it sometime.

But anyway, perhaps you'd now be good enough to tell us how old (at least a little more specifically than > 10k yrs) the earth is in your cosmology, and how an Earth older than 10k years fits with a literal reading of the Bible. Feel free to point to other posts or articles if this has been covered succinctly in the past. Thanks in advance.
