  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I will be waiting to make serious fun of this movie...

I never had an opinion on Ben Stein until I saw some of the interviews he did about this movie. Based on his education level, I thought that Ben Stein was going to be a little bit more intellectualy honest, instead of puking out all the usual creationist strawmen/Red Herring arguments on national TV for the benefit of the faithful.

He actually got on TV and asked "How evolutionists (what is an evolutionist anyhow?) can expect us to believe that a fully formed and functional car can emerge on its own from a junkyard full of random parts".

As long as creationists are going to keep rehashing all the same, lame, a-thousand-times-refuted, non-arguments and misrepresentations as evidence against the Theory of Evolution, nobody except the unwashed masses and people who are already creationists will ever take them seriously.

If Ben Stein actaully wanted to address what he think is an issue in our educational system objectively, he should start by not spreading misinformation about the opposing viewpoint and the issue in general. It is far easier to misrepresent the opposing viewpoint in their absence, and then proceed to debunk that misrepresentation for the benefit of the choir, than it is to address what the opposing viewpoint actually says.

Intellectual and academic honesty obviously isn't a consideration with people like Ben Stein-- he's only interested in creating propaganda and a rallying point for those who already share the same beliefs as him.

Shows What happens to scientists and teachers who question evolution.
Shows a biased view of how Creationists (by whatever suit) oh-so-desperately try to defend their lack of scientific method and try to appeal to the public as the "victims"
Sad really.

Im sure Creationists will eat this stuff up with knife fork and spoon like they have done with the lies of Ham, Hovind and Gish.

Apparently, the whole thing is just one big Godwin. And has been panned by every non-Creationist who has seen it. And not because it 'deals with uncomfortable truths', but because it is a terrible, ham-handed movie.

P.S. The producer lied to various biologists to get them on film. Good show of Christian morals, no?

I'd like to see this movie, just to see what all the fuss is about. It sounds quite interesting to me (not that I need science to tell me how everything was created, that is a matter of faith, to me).

God or Science? I'll go with God, thanks

I'll reserve my judgment until I've seen it ;)

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

For I am the LORD, I change not;

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

I'll go with that.

The only way that the idea of ID can be kicked out of science is if it was proven wrong.

Even the Encycopedia of Evolution will tell you it's not proven wrong.
That book talks about some of the points Ben mentioned.

Extreme evolutionists want it kicked out the door.
That's not science, that's dogma.

I would be interested in watching the film, purely on the off-chance that any new informatin could be found proving the wacky concept of creation "science", but I'm not interested in funding such a cause, so unless I can find it available for free I won't be going.

If there really was some sort of opppression going on in the academic world, then I would be very interested in learning about it and writing it. However, what we have in this situation is not a large number of learned scholars, each armed with mountains of verifiable, replicable evidence in support of intelligent design who are being silenced - although this is what is being claimed. Instead, we have a minority who supports intelligent design because of religious convictions, not scientific proof. No one is saying that these people are not free to believe in ID, just that, like anything else, what we teach in schools requires conclusive evidence. If you want to be taken seriously in the academic world, you need to be able to prove your point. That's all. Unfortunately, this film seems to be, from what I've heard, perpetuating the false notion that ID is being denied despite clear and obvious proof in support of it. If that is indeed the premise, than the movie is misleading, which in my opinion further eradicates the standing of individuals who want to be taken seriously in academia without following standard procedure.

The film is not about ID, and people trying to promote ID - It's about people who are being coerced into silence for questioning macroevolution.

I thought science was supposed to be about open investigation.

holyrocker is correct, at least that's what the film is supposed to be about. From what I have heard they didn't make their case though. The people they used as examples, and their situations, haven't quite stood up to scrutiny.

The whole "is ID science? is ID religion? Does it belong in the classroom?" issues had had their day in court and was determined by the Dover trial. (Hint: the answers are No/Yes/No). Science, as defined, doesn't allow for the supernatural. In fact, under oath a member of the Discovery Institute and ID proponant admitted ID was "science" the same way astrology is. But somehow I can't imagine anyone fighting to legitimize astrology or introduce it in the classroom as an alternative theory in the name of acadamic freedom.

I can see it now....What's Your Sign 101 :)

The idea of a film investigating the odd ostracization of people who question Evolution would be interesting. However, the reports that this movie takes a creationist spin on it disappoints me... particularly with the reports of false pretenses and manipulation.

I take a pretty much anti-Creationist stand, though I'm not 100% pro-evolutionist, either. (I mean Creationist as in a scientific study. I totally believe that God created the earth. I just don't think that can be proven at all with science. Nor do I take the Genesis 6 day creation story literally.) However, evolution is a much more proven theory than most Christians give it credit for. Similarly it is not quite as set in stone as the evolutionists would have you believe.

Anyway, i won't be seeing this for the same reason I wouldn't see a Michael Moore documentary--I feel like the makers are too biased to treat a subject fairly. Therefore there is no reason to watch it.

Just saw it last night; great film, very interesting, truthful, 5/5!
Truthful? The movie is dishonest from the get-go. They lied to people to get them to do interviews, they lie about the entire premise, they stole various animations, they stole songs for their screenings, they lied every step of the way. We must have different ideas of 'truthful'.

A lot of the film footage they showed was really old, probably before there was any real copyright law over footage, all black and white, though I never heard that accusation before, or about the music. Considering the "story" outline of the movie, it appears to me that the premise simply changed as it went.

Did you go see the movie? what did you think?
