This is a conversation that started in the progressive forum in the thread regarding how progressives can change the church.
The traditional forum then started a discussion on the issues of that thread.

The discussion centered around the possibility of leaving time, when desired, for those who want to be baptized into Christ to then later assent to all 28 and be voted in as a member.
One question raised was whether we are baptized into the church in the Adventist system. I did not feel I could answer there without going into debate. So I posted this here where all sides are free to debate.
13. Do you accept and believe that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is the remnant church of Bible prophecy and that people of every nation, race, and language are invited and accepted into its fellowship? Do you desire to be a member of this local congregation of the world church?
The 13th vow indicates that one of the requirements for baptism is joining the denomination and the local congregation of such denomination.
DL suggested that the vow was taken after baptism, so you could be baptized but not join.
However, the church manual also says the following:
Public Examination—The church has a right to know concerning the faith and attitude of every individual applying for church membership. It is proper for a public examination of all candidates to be held prior to their baptism, preferably in the presence of the church. If this should prove to be impracticable, then it should be brought before the church board or a committee appointed by the church board, such as the board of elders, whose report should then be rendered to the church prior to the baptism. When the alternative mentioned under the preceding section is used, opportunity should be given for candidates to give public expression of their desire to unite with the church and to be identified with and by the church.
