So everyone, what do you think is the scariest movie ever made? Psycho? Jaws? The Exorcist? I've seen all three and I think they all are overated. Recently I saw a Roman Polanski film called The Tenant and I though it was hands down the scariest movie I had ever seen. It's one of my favorite movies also. It's not scary in any sort of normal sense rather it's a guy wondering if he is going crazy. It was in all ways great. So what do you people think about the scariest movie ever?

Session 9 is pretty scary. It's about some workers removing building materials from an abandoned mental hospital, in preparation of new construction.
Have to agree!
I first saw this film several years ago in a little arthouse theater and could not stop thinking about it for several days. It now is out on DVD and I have to recommend to anyone who likes good back of the neck chills and deep in the gut fear to go out and look for this film.

The Grudge, hands-down, is the scariest movie I've ever seen, and that's saying a lot, because I've seen scores of scary movies.

I've seen movies with their share of gore, of jump-out-at-you moments, of creeping menace, and of characters slowly progressing toward insanity, but none of them combined the four elements, on such a visceral level, as The Grudge. I was literally shaking when I left the theater.

My remaining top favorites, in no particular order.

The Ring
The Others
The Omen (the original 1970's one, not the recent boring remake)
The Amityville Horror
The Exorcist
Poltergeist
Halloween
The Blair Witch Project

I've heard of The Tenant, and generally I'm not much for purely psychological horror (I though The Vanishing was pretty dull), and go more for the gothic ghosts-and-monsters kind-of thing, but I might check it out (90% on Rotten Tomatoes). I'll also try to see if I can find a copy of Session 9.

The Ring stands out on my list, because it's the first movie to scare me good in a long long time.

The Decent and 28 weeks later were both very scarey in the theater just because it's sooooo loud.
But without that quality sound it's not as scarey at home, but still very good.

The Evil Dead
Halloween
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
The Shinning

I have a few that scared me. We were just laughing about this the other day, because what scared me as a kid (Nightmare on Elm Street) just makes me laugh now. Anyhoo:

The Ring
Saw
Sixth Sense
Ju-on (the Japanese version of the Grudge)
28 Days Later
Exorcist
Seven

I would like to put a disclaimer on Jaws. Now that I watch it, I can see how cheesy it is, but holy moly, I am still terrified of the ocean because of that movie. I love the beach, but will not step foot in the ocean.

I'm sure I have more, but I have to think on it.

I've seen Session 9...It was just me and two other girls watching it..And we were terrified the entire time...I probably had my eyes covered for most of the movie, asking my friends what was happening. Haha, I'm so sad! :p

But typically I stay away from scary movies..I just can't handle them :(

The Others with Nicole Kidman

Movies usually don't scare me, but I was all alone (except for one man sitting many rows below me) in the theater when I saw it. I was so scared I nearly walked out of the movie!!! ^_^ I'm glad I didn't though because it is a really good movie.

I've never been really scared by films in that just about all I've seen get people scared by just pure shock and surprises, nothing terrifying. However the movie "The Host" really made me sit on edge. When you see that monster running along the ground for the first time - holy crap I couldn't breathe.

"The Ninth Gate" is another good one. Not really for shock value, but for the subject matter.
I watched "The Ninth Gate" last night, as I had never seen it all the way through, on AMC and I just found it to be really slow. Even so, I found myself really invested to find out what happens. It wasn't bad, but like I said, slow.

This is a bit of triva...anyone know who got their 1st movie break in the (big blockbuster of scary movies) Who Knows You're Alone??? And yes this was a scary movie.

I'll give you a hint...he's a 2 time back to back Oscar winner.

As far as my scariest movie it would have to be The very first Halloween.
