  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do you know Genesis was meant to be understood from a modern POV?

And because it was written by Moses, it wasn't for those 23 generations of non-Isrealites. So their existence or not doesn't really matter because the Torah wasn't for them, i was for the Isrealites. So, because of when it was written, who it was written by, and who it was written to, why can't it be meant for them?

[pedant]Israelite means descendant of Israel ben Isaac. [impedent]

I sit corrected. My imperfect knowledge of the timeframes of the Patriarchs made me think Jacob came after Moses while I was sure he came after Eber.

Oh dear, that just inspired a terrible pun: Was the Virgin Birth a Mis-Conception?

;)

(I can't believe it took me three hours to come up with this painful pun but...)

No. Since an unmarried woman has a particular title it would have been a Miss Conception.

Hewbrew. He never made it into Israel.

You are Israelite because of your ancestry, not because of your geography.

Furthermore, if the Bible was meant only for the Israelites, why has God allowed it to be translated into so many different languages for propagation around the world?

Hang on mate. I never said that the Bible was meant only for the Israelites.

I think Genesis was written in a way that primarily catered for the ancient Israelites, not modern day sensibilities. Genesis needs to be understood in the Middle Eastern context of its day, and not through our modern POV. Because the historical aspects of Genesis simply wasn't meant for us, although we can still appreciate its spiritual truths.

The question is, should every culture in the history of man read the bible as if it was written for their culture personally? Or should we assume it was written for the ancient Israelites to address issues in their specific culture, and interpolate the meanings to give it validity to our unique cultural issues?
