Did anyone else notice how what I was trying to say in the 'meat' thread went about 20 miles right over the Trads' heads? Holy smokes, what does a guy gotta do, draw up a big chart with small words and bright colors before they get it? Unbelievable.

And after all of that, the only thing a person brings away from it is that I am 'fighting the conviction to become a vegetarian'! Yeah, okay. After over 30 years of being a meat-eater, I am suddenly fighting against the desire to become vegetarian, because after all of these years I am now suddenly convicted on something that for me never even remotely held any moral implications.

Could I have wasted my time more completely on that issue?

I think Free said it best: I feel like I am in the Twighlight Zone.

But, I guess that locking a thread is a much better alternative to actually taking responsibility for saying outrageous things about a segment of society, isn't it?

I think the problem is concrete thinking. It is obvious that many of our friends on the Trad side are totally sold on the idea that they are actually the group that has been chosen by the Creator to rescue the world so that their task in life is to bring as many as they can to their side. This is why you saw them resort to the conviction tactic. It is designed to force one to reconsider his position because he is certainly kicking against the pricks. Don't ask me how to fight concrete thinking.

Just for clarification (again you know I am a meat eater) I did not say anything bad against anyone.

Also, in my request to the moderator to lock the thread because I did not think it was a very good representation of how our church would present the issue to others.

Anyway that was my reason. I know that the website I first posted was not the best but I did say that it was interesting - that was the extent of it.

I personally hold no hard feelings against you and if we ever got together I would be happy to photograph you taking that big trophy buck.

Mva, if they had just stuck to health, things would have been fine. But no, they had to go into the realm of the absurd with thier claims.

It doesn't matter. The point was completely lost on them and it still is. Maybe someday it will register and the lightbulb will go on.

But I doubt it.

I find it funny that it is a religious issue in the adventist church, while most vegeterrians I know are so because of animal rights or health.

Reminds me of hindus and buddists a bit..

To me it's not a religious issue. I'm a vegetarian because of health. I don't care if anyone else eats meat or not.

It always amazes me, though, when I see the lengths that some people will go to in defending what EGW wrote about diet and health when she was clearly wrong about a lot of stuff. Anyway, her health messages were in large part concerned with avoiding "animal passions" and "marital excess" and "secret vice," so that people could conserve their "vital life force."

I wasn't raised vegetarian but stopped eating meat in college--at the time mainly because I didn't have many opportunities to eat meat there. Now meat seems gross to me, too.

I chose to be vegetarian because:

(1) I am offended by the careless disregard for life that is present in the meat industry. This is evident in the wastage of meat that is slaughtered, the inhumane treatment of animals in storage and when they are slaughtered.

(2) I believe that the amount of meat production is a huge waste of our water supplies. It takes much more water to produce cattle and pigs than vegetable crops.

(3) Meat has more toxins and hormones which makes it an unhealthy and not ideal.

(4) Meat was the most expensive part of my grocery bill.

There are, however, many unhealthy vegetarians. Just simply eliminating meat from your diet won't fix it. The ideal would be to grow your own, or buy from a local grower (organic, no pesticides). But this is not always possible.

The whole point is that I don't see it as a spiritual thing. There is a theme that runs through the OT about respect for life and blood. This does not mean that I think anyone is being sinful because they eat meat.

Most processed 'vege meat' seems gross to me. And I love vegetables and salads too. But eating a 'plastic' piece of imitation meat makes me want to eat dirt. LOL! I also take supplements everyday and exercies regularly and get plenty of sunshine and water.

Maybe dirt would be healthier. I know a lot of unhealthy Adventists. I hardly ever eat fake meat--usually only at potlucks, and we don't go to those much anymore.

The fake meat is a good way to get protien, which can be difficult at the levels that I want it at. You can survive on a lot less, of course, but I want to build muscles. And I am lazy, so don't like cooking, and the fake meat I eat (Quorn, MorningStar Farm, Gardenburgar?) is all easily microwaveable.

Really, it is just flavored soy stuff. I also get protien from Tofu some, but can't cook it all that well... so it gets boring. In fact, I can't cook very well period so everything get's a bit boring.

But yeah, the only reason why I eat it really is because it is easy, and because I am trying to get 90-180 grams of protien per day. Honestly, even with the soy products I have a hard time going above 100 grams (and some of the soy products are 60% protien, which is as much as steak).

Soymilk and Tofu are likely much better ways to intake soy.. but I like to mix things up. And I like the stuff, and I know a lot of other meat eaters who like it also (some of the morningstar farm stuff I could pick out).

Yes, a lot of what she wrote was reflective of the era in which she lived. Although I disagree with Bradford's conclusions, at least he is honest about the fact that she wasn't really 100 years ahead of her time in her health messages.
