Speaking of correct and incorrect positioning of symbols and things...

Who hear saw the Passion of the Christ and noticed that the two thieves were on the wrong side of Jesus?

I didn't notice that, although I've only seen it twice.

You know, I've managed to completely avoid ever seeing that film... It wasn't really that I didn't want to see it due to the "blood and violence" factor, just I didn't really care to see it all that much. I think I was probably the ONLY evangelical protestant to not see it, but oh well.

You actually liked the Passion of the Christ?
I thought it was emotionalism to the highest degree and I have to say I really thought the scene where Jesus jokes around with the Theotokos was totally innapropriate and out of place...

Actually, I appreciated that scene. Too often we think of Jesus as a dour fellow, not unlike a proper Puritan of the New England variety.

But if Jesus took on our nature, then certainly he had a sense of humor. Are you suggesting Jesus would have been sinning to joke with his mother?

That scene was so worldly. As with most Holywood films on the spiritual they tend to follow two directions: either the utterly cold, distant, attempt-at-awe that fails miserably, or the warm fuzzy, one-of-us type of things.

If there ever was a Jesus that at least attempted to approach Christ with reverence and not totally fail, then I would say it would be a *few* scenes from "Jesus of Nazareth" by Franco Jeffireli (sp?). Again that production suffers like most western productions (beause they have no living contacts to look to for reference of the peace of Christ) but here and there it manages to give you an otherwordly Christ.

I think the most effective overall Christ was the few seconds in Ben Hur, where you only see the feet. More fitting. The rest of the movie is a western emotion-fest but I think you get the idea.

Don't get me started on the bloodfest. It is no coincidence you don't see gore in Orthodox imagery, even when the worst martyrdoms are depicted.

This post reminded me of an old thread from Monachos that discussed this very topic:

I can kind of see where you're coming from, Basil, but I can also see where Paleodoxy comes from. I can't agree with Protestant quotes such as "God has a sense of humor, where do you think we get ours from?"

While I believe that the Christ fully took on a human nature and most definitely had a sense of humor, I don't even want to think of God the Father having a sense of humor. He is unknowable, and I'm not going to attempt to understand Him. That bothers me.

If we can see Jesus gathering the small children with love and patience and care, or weeping over Lazarus, or chasing the Pharisees away... Why is it so ridiculous to assume that He laughed or joked a little?

Sharks are not demonic, they are just overgrown goldfish with huge appetites!

There is a saying among those who raise Goldfish:

If they were big enough, they would try to eat YOU !

As Eenie and Meanie gain size, I believe this is not an apocryphal saying.

I'm thinking that the fish 'swimming to the Right' is not indicative of post-777 CF.

(yes I realize that recent changes are in the right direction)
But then they will probably change, AGAIN, so I'm not holding my breath, or getting my hopes up. We have been through too much already.

You know I love you all. I ask an off the wall question about a fish symbol, I get great academic replies... then a belly laugh that brought tears to my eyes reading about demonic or not demonic sharks, and batman and holy water, etc etc.

Thanks for the laughs! (and the answers.)
