Is the DS more than just a game platform?

I'm thinking about getting one and was wondering are there any other types of software than games for it? I know there is Brain Age but are there any educational games like learning languages or is it pretty much just games? Is it likely there would be something like that available in the future?

Not that it's critical, there are enough games that look really interesting for me to get one but I thought it would be great if I could get a program to learn a second language or something like that. Thanks.

There are tons of second language programs! If I go into the game second of a store, there are usually as many or more educational software than there are regular games. There is software for Korean, Chinese, English, German, French, etc. Brain Age 2 has been out for awhile here.

I have no idea how available that type of software is in English, though. It's extremely popular here. I haven't been to North America in quite a while, so I really don't know what the selection there looks like.

Sweet!!! That will pretty much let me justify it to my wife...err...I mean that will pretty much make it a done deal for me.

Yes, honey, that's the new Spanish language program. I don't know why they named it Age of Empires.

Seriously, though, I'll do some searching and see if there are some in English. That would be so awesome.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard of any of those games being brought to the American shores. But if you find an importable game in English, let me know! That sounds really interesting.

Every game is exportable, and importable!

Well, if you go the homebrew route, it will also function as a media player. There's also a browser for it, but it hasn't been released in the US yet (but really, just use a computer, you'll be happier)

Well, I'm wanting something I can take to work to pass some time and my laptop still isn't a handheld. I'm still planning to get a DS for the games, I just thought it would be awesome if there was some good educational software, particularly language learning, available since I want to learn Spanish.
