Psa. 22:6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
I have often heard people in prayer telling God that they are just a worm, I always wondered why they said it, it is supposed to be a sign of humility to tell God you are a worm, even Jesus said he was a worm in Ps 22:6 and if Jesus said he was a worm then how much more we who are following in His steps
But what exactly was Jesus talking about here? Was he humbling himself and making himself like the least of all creatures or was he talking about something else?
Lets look at the word worm in Hebrew 8438 Towla 1) worm, scarlet stuff, crimson
a) worm - the female 'coccus ilicis'
b) scarlet stuff, crimson, scarlet
1) the dye made from the dried body of the female of the worm "coccus ilicis"
2) worm, maggot
a) worm, grub
b) the worm "coccus ilicis"
This type of worm, towla or coccus ilicis is a peculiar type of worm The female of the species when wanting to give birth to her young will find a suitable tree and attach herself there to the tree and lay her eggs, she covers the eggs with her body for protection and then she dies, as she dies she secretes her blood which becomes a sticky red covering for her young for protection, so her death and her blood gives life to her offspring
This is a beautiful type of Christ, he is our scarlet worm, when he wanted to birth the church, he found a suitable tree and he attached himself there, he shed his blood as a covering for all who want to take refuge in it and all who take refuge beneath his blood are truly saved
He is truly our scarlet worm; no one else can claim this title of worm for themselves
