  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

*sigh*

Dear Microsoft and Sony:

This is what happens when you try to turn our beloved game consoles into small PCs.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/746/746492p1.html

Please stop over-doing it with your gaming machines. We don't need nor want every single feature of a computer crammed into our game machines. It only serves to raise the price for features we have on our PCs.

And Sony, perhaps you should try to TEST your technology before putting it on shelves. Blu-ray is a great concept, sure. But it's CRAZY expensive, you can't seem to gather enough blue diodes to make the lasers (and thus, causing an embarassingly large supply shortage), and apparently it doesn't even work right with some TVs the way you claimed it was designed to. I can't believe there is this much trouble with the video connections on the PS3. VIDEO CONNECTIONS!

And Microsoft... Well, don't even get me started on you. All I'll say is this: Please stop trying to get your hand into every single market of technology just so you can screw it up. Your system has a terrible selection of games and relies only on first person shooters to get by. Halo will only keep the mindless drones busy for so long before they get bored of the "Shoot, Reload, Die, Respawn, Repeat" routine (which could be said of all FPS games).

We have computers for all the latest high-tech crap. Just give us an inexpensive system that WORKS and has fun games and wii will be happy.

Thank you.

The PS3 has its issues but I don't think any of it is more than we've experienced in the past with any new console release. No console has made it through flawless.

I was worried for whatever reason when I found out (duh) that my HDTV (a Sony) is 720p which seems to be the native resolution of the PS3 not 1080p but I don't feel so bad now.

This sounds like a gripe with first-person shooters, not with the game system. The 360 is a pretty fantastic piece of hardware. It also sounds to me like you don't have very extensive experience with first-person shooters, or are convinced that you aren't very good at them. The 360 has a large number of critically acclaimed games filling different genres than the first-person shooter. I own DOA4, Dead Rising, Oblivion (yeah, sure, it's on the PC; buying it for the 360 costs half as much as upgrading an outdated computer to match performance though) and Gears of War (INCREDIBLE, and a shining example of what modern FPS games should be like), among others.

Your beating a dead horse with that fanboy.
I've had this argument with him before.

He was saying it had horrible launch games, where in fact it had arguable the best launch titles in the history of console gaming.

I'll admit the game makers can do a better job than what we have now, especially with the online side of it.
But I'm having tons of fun.

Battlefield 3 till 4:30am last night for me......and I had to pry myself off of it. :)

Well, I knew it would end sometime, SUNSTONE. For quite some time, you'd actually managed to keep a reasonable amount of maturity in your posts here - and trust me, those of us who know you were all grateful for it - but I guess sooner or later it was bound to come to an end.

Your usage of the word "fanboy" seems more to me like a word you use to describe anything that I speak of in a positive light. And, of course, anytime I speak a single ill word about your beloved Halobox, you seem to lose your mind. I wasn't saying that PCs were better than game consoles or visa versa. I was saying that I don't like how manufacturers are trying to transform consoles into PCs. And if you read the last sentence of my post, you'd see who I'm rooting for in this generation of gaming (although, I guess in your eyes that would qualify me as a fanboy of them simply because I think they've got the right idea this time around).

Funny, in some of my older posts before the PS3's price point and other problems arose, you accused me of being a Sony fanboy multiple times. Seems more like you just like throwing that word around as your only line of attack (though I don't even see why you always feel an attack is necessary) and that you really don't have the ability to comprehend anything I'm saying.

As far as First Person Shooters go, they are all the same. I own Halo and Halo 2 - and several other FPS games on both PC and console. The only FPS games I really enjoy are games like Rainbow Six 3 because you're forced to strategize more. I've played plenty others and they're all the same to me. Call of Duty, Half-Life 2, etc. And I didn't say 360 didn't have anything else, but I'd say close to 70% of its library is either sports (which you can get on ANY console) or FPS games. Certainly not enough variety there for me.

And for the person who said every console has troubles at launch: Not like this.

Every system has a problem here and there - it's the basics of electronics. The same could be said of anything mechanical from toasters to trucks. But Sony and Microsoft have the "leave the glitches and fix them as consumers find them" routine down cold. Only one company has continued to make game machines with virtual invulnerability to such problems: Nintendo.

Will they do it again on Sunday?

Wii will just have to wait and find out.

Look man, I'm rooting for Nintendo just as hard as you are, but at the same time I recognize the need for multiple consoles and want them all to succeed to some degree. And I strongly disagree with your stance on first-person shooters. If you believe Half-Life 2 isn't worth playing, there really isn't much hope for you. Even the Halo series is a fantastic entry; the fact that it has hordes of raving devotees doesn't detract from how excellent the games themselves are. Counter-Strike remains a great shooter, and I just picked up Gears of War which has been a blast, with the best cover system any game has ever seen. So I'm not sure how you can assert that all FPS games are the same.

You're referancing the stories and plots of these games. I found the story behind Half-Life interesting, as well as Halo even. But I'm talking about gameplay. Once you get down to it, the gameplay of all of these is the same. Throw a grenade here, find some ammo there, get better guns as you go along, etc. And online is the same too - everyone runs for the missile launchers and sniper rifles, no matter what the game is.

As I said, the one FPS that stands out to me has always been the Rainbow Six series. For that matter, one of the reasons I want the Wii is for Metroid Prime 3 because that series is quite different from the standard FPS too.

I realize the need for multiple consoles as well - but I'd be happier if one of two things happened: Either Sony and Microsoft devote their consoles to GAMES instead of trying to be small PCs, or they move completely into the PC market with the Xbox and PlayStation brands and another company (maybe even Sega) gets into the console biz with Nintendo.

Bottom line: I hate these game console-turned multimedia machines. They cause more trouble than they're worth. Give me a game machine, and leave the rest of that multimedia stuff to my computer.

It's like I predicted a while ago. Sony took a gamble and lost BIG. By next year we will see a core system with less features for around $200 less. But not till AFTER Christmas...Sony will want to see if they can make up some of the major loss they faced with the launch during the holidays. If they can't, then a significantly less priced system will hit the market for the general gamer crowd.
Nintendo has hit an all-time high on the other hand. Selling out as many units as it did at launch within minutes AND I suspect it will have a major surge in selling for the holiday.

IT all comes back to the DS/PSP war. People saw the PsP with it's great graphics and said it would destroy the DS in sales...but then the DS came back with great games, while not as graphically great as the PSP, they were fun...and now the DS owns most of the handheld market while the PsP just sort of lingers around. Gameplay won over graphics. (not that the Wii can't do great graphics...it's got a processor 4 times as powerful as the gamecube afterall)

Sony hasn't lost, come on. The console is less than a week old.
Sony has its struggles but its nothing more than others have experienced.
They still lead this market and still have the most games and third-party developers (which is where the money is), more than others and ofcourse, we can't just say they didn't see this comming.
They are still kings of the hill. Its a painful reign but they have gained big-time even with less money in the bank. Console launches always start this way.

I agree that the DS won the handheld market long ago but Playstation will rule the console war for a few years at least.

the news revealed today that Sony took a major hit to its stocks due to much lower than expected sales of the PS3 and PSP. Sony is depending on the holidays to recoup some of the loss.

Give it a few months. They will figure out how to produce them quicker and cheaper. The kinks will be worked out of the production of the blu ray drives and things will not be as bad.

Sony, on the face of it, have lost their gamble of going for the high end stuff in the console but in the long run it will work out. The playstation brand is too strong for it to be toppled after a few delays. If people have had the PS2 and have got many games for that they will probably want to stick with playstation because of the brand loyalty. Once they start producing enough consoles the loss they will make on each console will decrease and once more games have been released they will be able to make money from it.

After investing so heavily in blu ray there is no way they could not use it in the console and it's right that they did wait until they could have it built in to the console as that is a crucial selling point because of the cost of standalone blu ray players.

Don't forget the whole Dell battery thing has not helped matters financially.

The next couple of months will be interesting but if the interest continues like it has done in the countries it's been released then it's not going to be anywhere near the doom and gloom that some people are suggesting. Don't forget that the PS2 is still a very strong product and is still selling well so that will help matters until they get on a roll with the PS3.

And this is why I sit in front of my computer, next to my perfectly functional PS2, laughing at all the people waiting for hours upon hours to get these "awesome new consoles". And why I am one of the few customers who won't have problems with my consoles (or at least, nowhere near as many). I play to get a PS3. I also would love to get a Revolution. But I'm going to wait for these problems to go away. Then I'll be a happy customer.

Now, if I could trust these dang companies to put out quality stuff on the first try, I'd be far more likely to be one of those crazy people waiting in line for 14 hours.
