My cousin's husband frequently sends my sister and I these text messages of Bible verses or something intended to be inspirational.

Now, I don't really find the particular verses that he sends to be uplifting or special in any way. It's almost as though they're randomly chosen and then fired off in a text message.

Here are some examples of some of the past texts that he's sent to me:

If any man be in Christ he is a new creature. Behold all things are become new. 2 Cor 5:17

Have you read your Bible today? Have you praed as yet? God is waiting and waiting for more! Blessings!

Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven!

I think that he's under the impression that he's somehow "witnessing" or doing his Christ-like duty by sending us these text messages. In a way, I feel annoyed by them and I want to ask him to stop sending them to me.

But then I have to wonder if it's some kind of major sin to turn away something that's intended as being godly.

In truth, I really don't need to be uplifted by way of text messaged Bible verses and questions as to whether I prayed today. But the guilt I feel as I'm about to pick up the phone and say, "Please stop spamming my cell phone" is almost unbearable!

What would you do?

Some guy we know send us huge religious things and religious poems he writes, etc. on a very regular basis.
He sends us things about the evilness of people whio claim to be Christians etc....we just delete stuff from him.
I think it sounds cruel or rude to say anything. Why not let him happily live in his little world, where he daily saves your soul? What can it hurt?

That would drive me crazy. Tell him to stop! You can't feel guilt about refusing these messages. It might be a great way for your BIL to get inspiration, but it's just not right for you. That's ok! That's like saying as Christians we're responsible to give to EVERY "Christian" charity under the sun. Nope. Just where you feel lead to do so! Right?

I would send him a copy of your cell phone bill, highlight the text message portion of the cost and let him know that he can make the check out to "Mr. Redguard"
All incoming text messages are free. But I think I'm probably going to send him a text message that says "Unsubscribe".

I feel better now that I know that most of you would find it annoying as well.

I wouldn't be a jerk about it, but I would definitely either politely tell him that you don't want any more messages, or just go on deleting them.

One of my brothers routinely writes long, maudlin, over-wraught, hyperbolic poems about his undying love for his Heavenly Father, and mails them to everyone in the family. I've never read a single one of them.

I know what you mean.

I don't want to be mean about it either, but I do want to improve on my assertiveness rather than just taking stuff and not saying/doing anything about it if I don't like it.

Yet another reason why Canada is better then America; you don't get charged for incoming text messages :(

My (Canadian) husband's grandmother's fresh-baked bread is on the list. Yum. :)
That's true! Canada DOES have the best fresh-baked bread!

Does she make it with Saskatchewan wheat?

I find it much better when someone tells me in person the verse and why it was so special to them that they just had to tell me. I find verses without that to be a bit useless. Even like the bibles that have passages suggested to look at if feeling lonely or hurt or unloved oe whatever. I found those to be useless as they just gave me a verse that told me what I already knew in my head but didn't believe in my heart.

What I hate is getting e-mail messages with some long poem, or letter about how wonderful God is (he is) and how much he has done for you (he has) and that if you don't forward this message to 10 people, you must not really love him (I really do!) I delete them. I don't need to prove my love for God by forwarding some stupid e-mail, so I understand the annoyance. I would tell him nicely that you appreciate the thought, but to please not send anymore messages.

That's called glurge, and I get all kinds of it from one of my cousins.

It's weird - she forwards dozens of those every week, not just to me, but everyone she knows. And my cousin hasn't seen the inside of a church in 30 years!
